Kansas Underclass: Catcher's Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Kansas Underclass Invitational Showcase on January 28 at Hoover Field in Wichita. Nearly 30 players in the 2019 and 2020 classes from around the region attended.
Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. In the coming days, we will break down the event position-by-postion, starting with catchers today. Although some catchers participated in other positions, this is just a break down of the catching performance. Players are listed in alphabetical order.
Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Catchers
Connor Allen, C, Wichita Collegiate, 2020
Allen is a 5-foot-11 205-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2020 class. He ran a laser timed 7.69 60 and 4.95 home to first. He has an exit velo of 85 mph. At the plate, solid consistent contact to the middle of the cage, open stance, smooth load with rhythm in hands, flashed power to the pull side, quick bat speed, strong frame. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.33 and 2.50-seconds, over the top release, fluid transfer working on time with footwork, 61 mph positional velo.
Daniel Bebee, C, Shawnee Mission South, 2020
Bebee is a 5-foot-11 153-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class. He ran a laser timed 7.64 60 and a 4.59 home to first. He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, gap to gap approach, open stance, wide base, level path with loose accelerated bat head, fell for the barrel. Behind the plate, quick feet working with quick catch and throw, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 1.96 and 2.24-seconds, top pop time of the event, 71 mph postiona velo, projectable lean frame.
Deriq Doty, C, Maize, 2019
Doty is a 6-foot-3 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class. He ran a 7.05 60, laster timed, and a 4.37 home to first. He has an exit velo of 85 mph and a tall, lean and loose build that will suggest added strength as he continues to develop. At the plate, balanced set up with short stride and minimal hand load, easy to repeat, leverage in lower half, gap-to-gap approach. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.01 and 2.10-seconds, some of the best times of the event, sit low for target, has flexibility for size, quick catch and throw with fluid footwork, high three quarters release, mostly accurate throws, 71 mph positional velo.
Grant Howard, C, Olathe Northwest, 2019
Howard is a 6-foot 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class. He ran a laser timed 7.29 60 and a 4.38 60. He has an exit velo of 78 mph. At the plate, At the plate, balanced stance, slight closed stride, smooth load with toe tap and some hand movement, level bat path, swing produced line drives gap-to-gap. Behind the plate, 2.09 to 2.41 pop-times with 63 mph positional velo, flexible set up with soft hands, over the top release, hands and feet in sync, mostly accurate throws.
Ryan Phillis, C, Wichita Northwest, 2019
Phillis is a 6-foot 160-pound right handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class. He ran a 7.86 60, laser timed, and a 4.71 home to first. He has an 81 mph exit velo and lean athletic frame. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth rocking action to load, short stride, no wasted movement in hands, flashed power to pull side. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.13 and 2.40-seconds, 57 mph positional velo, quick exchange, over the top release, fluid footwork, low set up with thin stance in feet, soft hands receiving the ball well, somewhat accurate throws.
Eli Schnee, C, Riley County, 2020
Schnee is a 5-foot-9 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class. He ran a laser timed 7.71 60 and a 4.78 home to first. He has an exit velo of 79 mph. At the plate, tall and open stance with rhythm in hands, in line stride, middle approach, level swing path, balanced throughout swing. Behind the plate, 2.33 to 2.50 pop times, 63 mph positional velo, clean transfer and throw, over the top release, fluid footwork, soft hands.
Cole Sphar, C, Maize, 2020
Sphar is a 5-foot-7 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class. He ran a 7.75 laser timed 60 and has an exit velo of 80 mph. At the plate, switch hitter with athletic frame, swing produced line drives to middle/oppo part of field on the right side, no wasted movement in load with small rocking motion to load on both side, short inline stride, more middle to pull side contact on left side. Behind the plate, 2.39 to 2.45 pop times, 58 mph positional velo, clean exchange with over the top release, most throws close to bag.
