JUPITER, FL—The second day of the World Wood Bat Championship had a full slate of games, starting at 8 a.m. and running past 9 p.m. The highlight of my day was during the second time slot as I took in the Evoshield Canes versus the Homeplate Chilidogs. LHP Rian Haire (South Caldwell HS, NC) started and went five innings, allowing just two walks while striking out six. He relied heavily on his fastball, which sat 89-91 mph and touched 92, generating several swings and misses early in the game. He didn’t mix in any secondary stuff until the second inning, when he broke out his mid-70s breaking ball with lateral action. Haire has a good, physical frame at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds. RHP Garrett Stallings (Grassfield HS, VA) pitched the final two innings striking out three and not allowing a hit or a walk.
