Iona Prep 15 - Stepinac 6

After trailing 4-0 after two innings, the Iona Prep offense proceeded to erupt in Tuesday’s 15-6 win over visiting Stepinac. Four players had at least three RBI as the Gaels (11-1) scored three in the third and four in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pummel their biggest rival.

A two-run double from Steve Boscia and RBI single from Patrick Heffernan chased Iona Prep starter Joseph LaSorsa in the first inning, and the Crusaders (8-3) added another run on an error in the second. But the Gaels broke out in third. After a run scored on Luis Guerrero’s RBI groundout, Chris Dutra hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to cut Iona’s deficit to 4-3. Stepinac added a run in the fourth when Heffernan hit a grounder to short and Tyler Gambardella avoided the tag on his way home, but Guerrero tied the score at 5-5 with a two-run homer to straightaway center in the bottom half of the inning. Two batters later, Dutra laced an RBI double to drive in the go-ahead run and the Gaels never looked back.

Dutra finished 2 for 3 with an intentional walk, a double, a homer, three runs scored and four RBI. Stephen Nigro also had four RBI (including a bases-loaded triple), Dan Carollo went 3 for 4 with three RBI and Andrew Perino scored four runs. Heffernan went 3 for 4 with two RBI for the Crusaders, while Gambardella scored three runs.

Sophomore left-hander Anthony Piccolino got the win in relief, tossing 4 1/3 innings with two strikeouts on 71 pitches (39 strikes) while allowing two runs, four hits and three walks. Mike Romano pitched the final two innings for Iona, surrendering one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three. Boscia took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and two walks with one strikeout on 71 pitches (39 strikes).
