Iona Prep 8 - Salesian 3

After giving up three runs in the first two innings of Iona Prep’s season-opener against Salesian, ace right-hander Brad Case settled in as the Gaels came back for an 8-3 win on Monday. The Rollins-bound senior did not allow a hit in his final four innings of work, tossing six innings with eight strikeouts on 87 pitches for the win.

Host Iona (1-0) tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Andrew Watson scored on a throwing error, which prompted to Salesian to call on ace left-hander Nick Gennarelli with two men on and no outs. Andrew Perino bunted for a base-hit to load the bases, and then Chris Dutra gave the Gaels a 4-3 lead with a sharp single to left. Gennarelli struck out the next two and nearly escaped the jam, but Nick Mulligan drove a bases-clearing double into the left-center field gap to extend Iona’s lead to 7-3.

Mulligan went 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored and three RBI, while Perino went 3 for 4 with a run scored and stolen base and Watson went 1 for 2 with a walk, a double and two runs scored. Skyler Pichardo, Brandon Bautista and Shawn Quezada each had two-out RBI hits for Salesian (0-1).
