Inside the Recruitment: 2018 Zyon Avery Commits to Ohio

By Phil Wade

Indiana Executive Director

PBR Future Games participant Zyon Avery (Ben Davis HS) recently committed to Ohio University.

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose to commit to Ohio?

Avery: I chose Ohio primarily because of my relationship with coaches Wamsley and Smith; not to mention the at home feel I had on campus. I also felt it was a place I could contribute to the team right away.

PBR: Where did they first see you compete?

Avery: I believe they first saw me compete at the PBR Future Games.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Avery: I was being recruited by Xavier, Eastern Illinois, Tulane and Toledo.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Avery: It was a very exciting process that was enjoyable, but slightly stressful at the same time. All in all it was an experience I will never forget!

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career after HS?

Avery: I was looking for a program that could develop me as a player and a young man. I felt that was Ohio. I also wanted to be in a program with a winning and respected tradition.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you?  Was there a particular game or event you feel turned the corner for you?

Avery: The recruiting process began to really heat up for me at the beginning of this past summer season. I think the Top Prospect Games showcase is when I started to get legit interest and started to have conversations with college coaches.

PBR: At what point did you realize you were a college caliber player and become serious about taking your game to the next level?

Avery: I realized I was a college caliber player after my first PBR showcase going into my freshmen year. I wasn't too far behind in strength in skill working out with guys older than me.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in Indiana, and why?

Avery: The best player I have faced in High School is Michael McAvene. He had a power fastball and a hard slider that I'd seen nothing like before. Easily the best pitcher I've ever faced.

PBR: What advice would you give young baseball players striving to get where you are at?

Avery: To never stop grinding. Learn to fight through adversity and use criticism as fuel to work even harder.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Avery: My most memorable moment of my baseball career would have to be being a Varsity starter my Freshman year.

PBR: Preview your high school season for us.  How do you feel your team will be?  What are your expectations and goals?

Avery:  I feel our team will be exceptional this season. We are playing with a chip on our shoulder and our goal is a state title!

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer?  What has been your most memorable experience with them?

Avery: I play for the Cincinnati Spikes. This will be my first summer with this organization and I am excited about creating memories with a very strong group of Midwest young men who plan on making some noise nationally.
