December 11, 2014
By Dylan Hefflinger
Ohio Editor in Chief/NW Scout
Alex Lam, 3B, Springboro HS, Class of 2015
PBR: Why did you choose Thiel?
Lam: I chose Thiel because it was a very good academic school and their baseball program is on the rise. Also the chance to play as a freshman was a big factor.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Lam: Bluffton University, Belllarmine University, Ohio Dominican University
PBR: Where did the head coach Joe Schaly and the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?
Lam: Coach Schaly and his coaching staff first saw me play at the Agona showcase held at Wright State. After the event he emailed me with interest and I eventually took a visit.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Lam: I'm not quite sure but I will work hard this off season and see where things go next year.
PBR: What team do you play for in the summer, what is your most memorable moment and how has travel baseball helped your development as a player?
Lam: Cincinnati Force. My most memorable experience was the 10 day bus trip we took to Louisville, and South Carolina this past summer. It was fun rooming with Aaron Miller and Nate Broughton. We beat the nationally ranked East Cobb Astros under the lights at the University of South Carolina. It was a well played game and my high school teammate Brian Jewsikow got the save. Another big moment was when I hit a homerun to dead center on the last day of the trip. Travel ball has helped me see the best competition there is in the country. Playing baseball in the South is nothing like it is in Ohio.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Lam: Probably my parents. They spent countless hours on the road and paying for hotels and showcases. Coaching wise, it would have to be my summer coaches Scott McVey and Greg Short. They taught me the fundamentals of how to succeed at the next level and Coach Short has always emphasized the mental side of baseball.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?
Lam: I expected it to be very stressful but once a couple schools showed interest, it wasn't too bad.
PBR: What were your stats last spring season at Springboro?
Lam: I'm not sure. But in the summer: Batting Average .406.
PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher that you have faced?
Lam: From Ohio, Brad Wilson. Overall, the pitchers that threw for the East Cobb Astros.
