With our latest rankings release for the 2022 class we decided to dive in deeper with a breakdown of the top 10 at each position. Today we continue with middle infielders, FIVE of whom are currently uncommitted.

TOP 10 MIDDLE INFIELDERS / CLASS OF 2022 

Cole Young SS / OF / North Allegheny, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 2 / POS: 1 OverallRank: 33 / POS: 4 Quick Hits: The 6-foot, 170-pound North Allegheny product is extremely athletic with present twitch throughout the actions allowing the sweet-swinging lefty to blow the doors off of our Preseason All-State Western event in February with next level ready measurables across the board. Utilizes a short, quick barrel and advanced fluidity in a powerful lower half creating loud contact with regularity at the front of the plate, yielding bat-exit velocities as high as 93 mph. The swing plays even better in-game evidenced by an already prolific high school career and some of the better bat to ball skills in the overall PBR ‘22 class rankings. Combine that with the ability to run with the best of them (6.66 60-yard dash) and you can make sense of the top of the order projections at the next level. The middle infielder moves flawlessly on the defensive side of the ball with impressive range to either side and consistent, gliding actions creating downhill momentum towards the target. Displays the chance to be an impact defender at the collegiate level from day one, and with increased physicality, you’re talking about a serious chance of reaching one of the higher ceilings in the class. First Glimpse: 6/03/19 North Allegheny vs. McDowell - Young went wild in the 10-2 win accruing three hits: two home runs, and a double while scoring four runs and reaching base all five times in the playoff matchup. Breakout Performance: 2/23/20 Preseason All-State Western - 6.66 60-yard dash, 93 mph bat-exit velocity, 86 mph IF velocity, top performer. The Future: The Duke commit has been off the open market since his Freshman year, giving you an idea of how high the Blue Devils coaching staff is on him. The physical tools are noticeable in every phase of the game and being one of the better “gamers” we’ve seen certainly helps Young’s case to get on the field early into his collegiate playing career. With plenty of room to fill out a frame that currently produces natural twitch and quality bat speed, the slick middle infielder has a good chance to draw considerable draft interest down the line and should be one of the closer follows in the class entering what could be a historic Junior season.

Gavin Miller SS / RHP / West Allegheny, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 4 / POS: 2 OverallRank: 57 / POS: 9 Quick Hits: The 5-foot-11, 170-pound primary middle infielder is built similarly to Cole Young and exudes most of the same likeable qualities with advanced athleticism in the frame while still having the room to fill out a long-limbed frame. The West Allegheny product gets on-plane with the baseball early creating impressive extension through the zone, allowing for the ability to use all fields at the plate. The right-handed hitter has posted bat-exit velocities as high as 90 mph and possesses some of the better bat to ball skills in the class. An above-average defender, Miller displays quickness on his feet and noticeable range towards the middle of the field while making the play on the run with ease. The 60-yard dash time may need to come down slightly to stay on the left side of the infield (7.00) but the actions are smooth and next level ready at the moment. The right-handed pitcher has been up to 87 mph out of a loose, high ¾ arm-slot demonstrating occasional sink and command in the zone. Mixes well featuring a tight 75-77 mph breaking ball that is two-plane at times and a 75 mph changeup thrown at near arm-speed. First Glimpse: 4/03/18 West Allegheny vs. Chartiers Valley - Got the win on the bump in the 10-0 drubbing of Chartiers Valley. Breakout Performance: 5/21/19 West Allegheny vs. Mars: WPIAL PLAYOFFS - Helped West Allegheny to a 4-3 playoff victory accruing two hits in the win. The Future: The Auburn commit projects as an early contributor at the next level with one of the  higher floors in the class at the moment and ability to continue adding muscle onto a lean, athletic frame. That puts him into the “must follow” tier entering what should be an extremely productive Junior campaign, and could reasonably explode if extra strength is added sooner rather than later. With the ability to be a legitimate top of the order run creator moving forward, the current extra base hit projection and two-way potential are added bonuses.

Jacob Kendro SS / Norwin, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 16 / POS: 3 OverallRank: 380 / POS: 83 Quick Hits: The 6-foot-1, 170-pound middle infielder demonstrates above-average athleticism and physicality in the frame with an explosive lower half creating advanced barrel whip into the hitting zone. Gets on plane very early with the baseball yielding top-notch barrel awareness each time we’ve seen him in game action allowing the ball to come off of his bat differently than other prospects. The hit tool stands out the most for the sweet-swinging righty at the moment and most likely projects Kendro as a high ceiling, middle of the order contributor at the next level with the chance to get even better down the line by adding strength onto the frame. The Norwin product is extremely athletic on the defensive side of the ball with smooth actions in the footwork utilizing downhill momentum and a powerful first step giving him more than enough range on the glove side and ability to take hits away with regularity in the middle of the field. First Glimpse: 5/16/19 Norwin vs. Mt. Lebanon - Led the offense with a multi hit performance in the lopsided 10-2 win over Mt. Lebanon. Breakout Performance: 6/02/19 PBR Fall Limited Series - Recorded multiple hits in-game action for Flood City Elite while showing off the hit tool with repetitive hard barrels to all fields. Didn’t see many chances defensively, but certainly looked the part covering everything on the left side of the field. The Future: The Tennessee commit brings to the table bat to ball skills ahead of his age and looks like he’s in complete control of each at-bat, making him one of the tougher outs at the plate in the class. The right-handed hitter produces consistently hard contact to all fields and with added strength, could explode on the offensive side of the ball. The primary middle infielder should be a very close follow entering what will be an impact Junior season and could see his ceiling jump considerably if things break just right.

Simmi Whitehill SS / 2B / Bishop Shanahan , PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 33 / POS: 4 Quick Hits: The 6-foot, 180-pound primary middle infielder shows advanced athleticism in the frame getting a ton out of a violent lower half creating present gap-to-gap pop and legitimate pull-side juice. The left-handed hitter generates above-average hip-shoulder separation at the plate allowing for vicious intent in the box and noticeable bat speed into the hitting zone. Has recorded bat-exit velocities in the low 90’s and displays some of the better in-game successes among his ‘22 classmates. The primary shortstop plays low to the ground with a low center of gravity and utilizes comfortability and confidence in the glove hand which should allow him to stick on the left-side of the infield at the next level. With arm-strength in the low-to-mid 80’s and downhill momentum created towards the target, all signs point to a ready to go shortstop prospect that stands out in all facets of the game. First Glimpse: 7/28/19 National Scene - Had two hits for Team Elite in the lopsided victory while scoring two runs. Breakout Performance: 5/06/19 Cedar Cliff vs. Bishop Shanahan (Class 5A Quarterfinals) - Recorded a hit in playoff action and the loss to Cedar Cliff. The Future: The Maryland commit projects as a top of the order run-contributor at the next level and features the ability to hit anywhere from 2-5 in the order. The left-handed hitter possesses some of the better bat to ball skills amongst his classmates and can drive the ball out of the park if pitched into his “nitro zone” on the inner half. The 60-yard dash time may have to come down in order to slot into the top of a collegiate batting order (hovering around 7.00 at the moment) but nevertheless, Whitehill should be an early contributor with a chance to impact the game defensively at a premier position making him a “must follow.”

Brandon Wingenroth SS / RHP / Lancaster Catholic, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 36 / POS: 5 Quick Hits: The 6-foot, 165-pound Lancaster Catholic product possesses an athletic build with long limbs and continues to get better each time we’ve seen him. The twitch is noticeable in the hands at the plate, as the right-handed hitter stays behind the baseball well creating natural backspin to all fields with 86 mph bat-exit velocities. Stands out the most defensively at the moment, making tough plays on the run look routine while showcasing legitimate range to either side. The athleticism in the movements is noticeable and projects for Wingenroth to step onto the field as an above-average, impact defender with 88 mph arm-strength across the diamond. The right-handed pitcher can step on the mound and run it up to 85 mph from a quick, high ¾ arm-slot mixing in a 67-70 mph breaking ball featuring sharp, late break out of the zone. Needs to make improvements on the command of the changeup (68-72 mph), but shows real two-way capabilities with a next level ready curveball that can be a true out pitch moving forward. First Glimpse: 2/17/19 Preseason All-State - 7.24 60-yard dash, 81 mph IF velocity, 83 mph bat-exit velocity, 77-80 mph FB, 66-68 mph CB, 69-71 mph CH. Breakout Performance: 3/01/20 Keystone State Bombers Scout Day - 7.03 60-yard dash, 88 mph IF velocity, 86 mph bat-exit velocity, 83-85 mph FB, 67-70 mph CB, 78-79 mph CH, top performer. The Future: The Penn State commit possesses projectability in the frame and a high ceiling should be expected accordingly. The right-handed hitter will need to improve on the offensive side of the ball in order to get on the field early into his playing career, but will be hard to deny with off-the-charts athleticism and the makings of a day one impact defender. An interesting follow with real “boom” potential, Wingenroth could reasonably explode entering what should be a deep playoff run for a talented Lancaster Catholic squad.

Alex Ruiz SS / 2B / McCaskey, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 43 / POS: 6 Quick Hits: The 5-foot-9, 155-pound middle infielder is an advanced defender with easy gliding movements across the diamond creating advantageous hops with regularity. Plays with a quick 4.0 second pace and makes even the tougher plays look routine at times. Arm strength plays at a premier position (82 mph with carry) and has some of the better hands among his peers in the ‘22 class. The McCaskey product has come a long way offensively and features a balanced, short stroke through the hitting zone while staying behind the baseball well. Generates natural gap to gap barrels to the tune of 86 mph bat-exit velocities and demonstrates advanced plate awareness in-game. A player that can get a ton more physical in the frame, Ruiz presents a high floor, high ceiling candidate. First Glimpse: 3/02/19 Keystone State Bombers Scout Day - 7.34 60-yard dash, 78 mph IF velocity, 75 mph bat-exit velocity. Breakout Performance: 3/01/20 Keystone State Bombers Scout Day - 7.16 60-yard dash, 82 mph IF velocity, 86 mph bat-exit velocity, top performer. The Future: Currently uncommitted, Ruiz possesses a unique skill set that will be of interest to a multitude of programs heading into a busy end of the summer. With noticeable improvements across the board especially offensively, the McCaskey product now boasts above-average abilities on all sides of the ball and features a real chance to be an impact player from day one. With room to add plenty of strength onto a lean, athletic frame, the sky's the limit and Ruiz could realistically turn into the steal of the class if he continues reaching his offensive ceiling.

David Kessler SS / 3B / Bethel Park, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 48 / POS: 7 Quick Hits: The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Bethel Park product possesses an advanced lower half allowing for present sink and fluidity in the swing, creating easy barrel whip through a slightly uphill path into the hitting zone. Displays a strong top hand in the box, arriving to the ball consistently at the front of the plate generating noticeable pull-side lift. Creates solid extension through the ball with advanced hip/hand connection yielding loud 96 mph bat-exit velocities and noticeable juice to either gap. The shortstop has improved drastically defensively and displays sneaky athleticism in the frame while moving extremely well laterally taking away hits in the middle of the field with a slick glove hand. An 85 mph arm-strength should keep Kessler on the left side of the infield moving forward and with constant improvements year to year in his game, the arrow is pointed steadily north entering what should be a huge Junior season. First Glimpse: 7/23/19 Western PA College Prospect Showcase - 7.53 60-yard dash, 75 mph IF velocity, 90 mph bat-exit velocity. Breakout Performance: 3/01/20 Pittsburgh Outlaws Scout Day - 4.63 home to first, 82 mph IF velocity, 96 mph bat-exit velocity, top performer. The Future: Currently uncommitted, Kessler now offers a high floor with a ready to go frame when he steps onto a collegiate campus. The right-handed hitter is best at the dish where he projects as a middle of the order run producer at the next level with quickness in the hands and quality bat to ball skills. With adjustability in a strong lower half combined with constantly improving defensive skills, the Bethel Park product has seen his stock increase dramatically over the last year and should command a high following this summer accordingly.

Michael Trommer SS / RHP / Archbishop Wood, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 51 / POS: 8 Quick Hits: The 6-foot, 180-pound primary shortstop features a physical frame and at the moment projects as a middle of the order run producing bat at the next level. The left-handed hitter possesses noticeable strength in the lower half creating present pull-side pop and loud contact out in front of the plate. Bat-exit velocities have crept into the 90+ mph range and with sneaky athleticism in the frame, should expect to add more power in the coming months. The primary middle infielder plays low to the ground with powerful steps allowing for 80 mph arm-strength across the diamond. While the 7.47 60-yard dash might mean a move to third base at the next level, this high level athlete still gets it done with a quick first step and creates advantageous routes to the baseball. The right-handed pitcher features legitimate two-way ability with an 84 mph fastball from a quick and high ¾ arm-slot showcasing consistent sinking action. Mixes well with a sharp 68-70 mph CB demonstrating two-plane action at times and a 74-75 mph CH at near fastball arm-speed. First Glimpse: 6/23/18 National Scene - Recorded three hits for All In Baseball in the victory with two runs scored. Breakout Performance: Fall Measurables & Evaluation Showcase - 7.47 60-yard dash, 80 mph IF velocity, 90 mph bat-exit velocity, top performer. The Future: Currently uncommitted, Trommer features legitimate two-way capabilities while throwing three pitches for strikes and commanding the zone while seeing strikeout numbers go through the roof. If that’s not intriguing enough, the powerful lefty should easily slot into the middle of a collegiate lineup early into his playing career and be an impact bat. One of the more intriguing uncommitted players in our ‘22 class rankings, the Archbishop Wood product offers a high ceiling and could explode entering what should be a huge Junior campaign.

Quinn Moody SS / 2B / Central Bucks East, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 66 / POS: 9 Quick Hits: The 5-foot-11, 175-pound shortstop added two inches and twenty pounds since the last time we’ve seen him and saw measurables across the board jump significantly. One of the better athletes in the class, the Central Bucks East product is extremely athletic with twitch in the hands at the plate evidenced by a 90 mph bat-exit velocity. Timing can be an issue in certain cases, but when the front foot gets down Moody generates loud and violent bat speed out in front of the plate creating damage to the pull side. A 6.73 runner, he should have a multitude of chances to succeed at the top of a collegiate lineup early into his collegiate playing career. The shortstop moves smooth and effortlessly covering ground on the defensive side of the ball featuring an advanced 87 mph arm-strength across the diamond which should allow him to be an above-average defender at the next level. First Glimpse: 2/01/19 Bucks County Generals Scout Day - 7.06 60-yard dash, 87 mph IF velocity, 90 mph bat-exit velocity, top performer. Breakout Performance: 2/15/20 Preseason All-State Southeast - 6.73 60-yard dash, 87 mph IF velocity, 90 mph bat-exit velocity, top performer. The Future: Currently uncommitted, Moody is another low risk, high reward player that is seeing his stock trend heavily in the right direction. The actions are intriguing in all facets of the game and the 5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect plays with a high level of confidence in-game; a huge part of his success that should not go unnoticed. With another big summer and standout high school season, the Central Bucks East product should firmly hold his spot in the rankings and is another one that could shoot up the board at any time & be the steal of the ‘22 class.

Sean Finn SS / 2B / Central Bucks South, PA / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 69 / POS: 10 Quick Hits: The 5-foot-8, 165-pound two-way prospect is a middle infielder first, and stands out with his above-average hit tool at the plate. The right-handed hitter creates explosive lower half rotation in the box while making consistent, loud contact with routine backspin to all fields. Bat-exit velocities have approached 90 mph in a frame that has yet to fully develop, hinting at more power coming in the near future. The primary shortstop displays a soft glove hand that can give or take depending on the hop and has demonstrated arm-strength as high as 88 mph from his position meaning Finn has the ability to play anywhere on the diamond. The right-handed pitcher can pump it up in the 85 mph range with arm-side run on the hill out of a tough ¾ arm-slot while mixing in a two-plane low 70’s curveball, and changeup with sinking action at 75 mph with near fastball arm-speed. First Glimpse: 1/26/19 Preseason Preview - 7.70 60-yard dash, 77 mph IF velocity, 80 mph bat-exit velocity. Breakout Performance: 2/17/20 Preseason All-State Southeast - 7.24 60-yard dash, 88 mph IF velocity, 89 mph bat-exit velocity, top performer. The Future: Currently uncommitted, Finn is the total package with a chance to impact the game at almost any infield position including the mound. Positional flexibility becomes more and more of an emphasis while recruiting, which is why we are pretty bullish on Finn’s prospects at the next level. With an already advanced hit and throw tool, the Central Bucks South product should accrue a heavy amount of interest once baseball activities resume full-scale in Pennsylvania and could skyrocket up the rankings with a legitimate chance to reach an uber-high ceiling down the line.
