The 2016 draft was a banner year for Illinois with five former high school products getting picked on the first day. While Illinois collegiate prospects were getting popped early and often, it took 15 rounds for the first high school player to be drafted, when the Padres selected OF Jack Suwinski. RHP Jean Casanova (35th round, Texas Rangers) and RHP Kevin Malisheski (38th, Los Angeles Dodgers) were the other two Illinois high schoolers to sign last year.

This year’s Illinois high school draft might yield a bit more output, but not by much. Many of the top prospects in Illinois’ 2017 class will likely go to college and become solid draft prospects down the road.
