IL/WI All-State Games: Preview

By Andy Sroka
Staff Writer, Associate Scout

Tomorrow, June 30, the PBR Wisconsin and Illinois staffs will meet at The Rock Complex in Franklin, Wis., to host the annual All-State Games – an invite-only event for the some of the top incoming juniors from both states. The event will host both a pre-game workout in a showcase format followed by live gameplay.

And, for the first time ever, we’ll be live-streaming each of the three games to be played. We’re expecting the first pitch of game one to be thrown at 10:30 a.m., and we’ll be streaming it live with multiple camera angles via Twitter. Games two and three have tentative start times of 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., with a showcase/workout taking place in between each. You’ll be able to find a link to those streams once the games are live on Twitter.

WISCONSIN ROSTER

The Wisconsin representation headed to The Rock tomorrow is a loaded list, headlined by a couple highly ranked and uncommitted prospects: 3B Nick West (Verona Area), OF Cuyler Zukowski (Madison La Follette) and 3B Gabriel Richardson (Eau Claire North). Zukowski and Richardson are among the top right-handed power threats in the state’s exciting 2022 class, and both are ranked inside Wisconsin’s top-25. West is a long-levered switch-hitter with a real knack for the barrel.

Cuyler Zukowski (3/15/20)

Headed all the way from River Falls is 3B Ragan Pinnow, a prospect we’ve not seen since ourselves since July of 2019 – though he has made an appearance at a PBR Minnesota event since. He’s a two-way prospect with an athletic right-handed bat and the right kind of actions to handle third base.

OF Landon Behringer (North Fond du Lac) was one of the winners of the winter, showing well on two separate occasions at preseason showcases. He’s a high upside athlete – and a sub-7.00 runner – with a loose, athletic righty bat who profiles well as a center fielder, long-term.

Like Behringer, N.J. Elias (Verona Area) was another prospect who climbed the rankings after a strong performance in the winter. He’s a versatile athlete with a rhythmic right-handed bat with some innate bat strength. His athleticism allows him to show well on defense in both the infield and outfield.

Back on the infield, there are several up-the-middle types expected to show well tomorrow: Jenkin Alexander (Sun Prairie), A.J. Lausten (Hartford Union), T.J. Williams (Racine Horlick), and Camdin Jansen (Racine Lutheran), among them. Alexander is a bat-first second baseman who swings a fast, loose left-handed bat. Lausten has shortstop actions with big arm strength and he, too, swings a left-handed bat that strikes the ball with some authority. Williams is a live-wired top-of-the-order type who plays a dynamic middle infield who gets the most out of his lefty bat for spray contact to all fields. And Jansen is fresh off a great performance last week, possessing some big upside in his 6-foot-1 frame with excellent shortstop actions and a projectable right-handed swing.

There are several arms worth noting, too, like RHP Tyler Deleskiewicz (Badger), RHP Braydon Cooper (Catholic Memorial), LHP Willard Peterson (Evansville), RHP Caden Capomaccio (Notre Dame Academy), and RHP Joey Schneider (West Bend West).

ILLINOIS ROSTER

Arguably the top prospect headed to The Rock tomorrow is OF Jordan Skolmar (Stevenson), another prospect who broke out this past winter at his first-ever PBR event, the Underclass Invitational. There, the strong Stevenson then-sophomore ran a 6.71 while showing pull-side pop with a 97 mph exit velocity – and he also topped 94 mph to home during his outfield reps.

The fellow top-40-ranked prospects headed to The Rock alongside Skolmar are C/INF Kyree Alexander (Thornwood), SS/RHP Nolan McMasters (Glenwood), SS Casey Hintz (St. Viator), and LHP Shane Curtin (Mount Carmel). Alexander’s a highly athletic prospect which allows him to shine both behind the plate and at shortstop, packed with a switch-hit twitchy bat. McMasters became a high-follow prospect at the preseason Peoria event where he showed exceptionally at both short and the mound. Hintz is another athletic, smooth shortstop making his way up north tomorrow with a repeatable right-handed swing. Curtin will be one of the top arms to take the mound tomorrow, too; he was sitting 82-84 mph back in February from the left side with an advanced changeup made even more effective by his feel to pitch.

RHP Kaiser Quick (Metamora) is another emerging arm to know ahead of time. He was sitting 84-85 mph in February with an upside slider that looks to earn swings and misses as he further harnesses it. He’s also on the same team as potential battery mate C/OF Brendan Summerhill (Whitney Young). Summerhill’s smooth, simple left-handed bat and overall athleticism makes him a high-follow in the state.

C/1B Victor Izquierdo (Lockport) carries big power potential to the right-handed box and he’s pretty light on his feet, especially for his size, both behind the dish and at first base.

RHP/INF Ethan Clark (Lakes Community) is a highly projectable loose-armed righty who was up to 84 mph in January.

There’s many more names headed to Wisconsin tomorrow capable of breaking out even further as high-follows in Illinois’ blooming 2022 class, so stay tuned.
