I-10 Border Battle: Pitching Analysis

On Monday, January 16, Prep Baseball Report and its staff converged on Lamar University in Beaumont to evaluate players from all over the states of Texas and Louisiana in the first annual I-10 Border Battle. The day began with each player going through a full pro-style workout, then continued with a game between Team Texas and Team Louisiana. The PBR staff was able to record stats and video on each player in attendance. PBR will continue to work to be the #1 news source for all of high school baseball across Texas. Below is a complete breakdown of all ten pitchers, some of which are two-way players. Each player has an updated profile with stats, a player write-up, and video from the event. Listed below are the top performing arms from the event.

+ Reed Smith, RHP/OF, Cy-Fair HS, 2019
5-foot-10, 170-pound frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with long, loose arm action. Creates good leverage with lower half hip turn down the mound with an aggressive delivery. His fastball ranged from 86-88 mph with some life at the bottom of the zone. Smith has good feel for his slider at 74-75 mph with 10-4 shape. He throws a straight changeup from 73-74 mph.
+ Parker Moye, LHP/OF, Evadale, 2019
6-foot-2, 230-pound, strong frame. The uncommitted sophomore left-hander works from a high-¾ slot with advance, quick arm speed. Moye starts his delivery with some rhythm then moves down the mound aggressively after hand-break. The fastball gets on hitters quickly, ranging from 84-87 mph with late life. He threw his slider from 71-72 mph with 1-7 shape and some downward tilt. With his strong frame and quick arm he is sure to garner the attention of college coaches and scouts this spring and summer.
+ Nolan Cox, LHP/OF, Dayton HS, 2018
6-foot-3, 160-pound, long-limbed, athletic, projectable frame. The left-hander works from a high-¾ slot with long, loose arm action. Cox has a smooth, repeatable delivery with good lower half mobility, lands in-line with his front foot closed. Showed good command of fastball at 79-80 mph. Throws his curveball for a strike from 62-63 mph with 2-8 shape. Cox maintains good arm speed on his changeup that he throws from 69-71 with slight arm-side fade.
+ Cole Payne, SS/RHP, Cuero HS, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound, long, lean, athletic frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with quick arm speed from back-to-front. Shows an athletic delivery with good lower half mobility. His fastball ranged from 82-83 mph with good tilt. He throws a sharp curveball 69-71 mph with 10-4 shape. His straight changeup ranges from 73-74 mph. With Payne’s projectable frame and athletic two-way ability, he is sure to gain the attention of college recruiters.
+ Kyle Reece, SS/OF, Cy-Fair HS, 2019
6-foot, 160-pound, long-limbed, projectable frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with loose arm action. Shows some rhythm with an in-line delivery, level shoulders, lands square. Reece was able to locate his fastball on both sides of the plate from 79-80 mph (85 mph from the outfield). His curveball had 10-4 shape, ranging from 64-67 mph. He shows feel for a changeup at 73-74 mph.

+ Matthew Boase, RHP/OF, Tomball Memorial HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 165-pound, long-limbed frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with longer arm-stroke. Smooth delivery with some athleticism down the mound, landing square. Fastball has some downward tilt at 80-82 mph. Slider shows cutter-like action at 76-78 mph.
+ Max Bernstein, 1B/RHP, Klein HS, 2019
6-foot-1, 190-pound frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a short, compact arm-stroke. His fastball ranged from 68-72 mph. His curveball ranged from 62-63 mph, while his changeup was 68 mph.
+ Tony Limon, 2B/RHP, Klein HS, 2019
5-foot-7, 130-pound, lanky, still developing frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with shorter arm circle and elbow-dominated arm action. Shows some rhythm in his delivery with level shoulders and lands square. His fastball ranged from 71-75 mph. Throws his curveball with 11-5 break at 59-62 mph.
+ Hunter Pachal, 1B/3B/RHP, Oak Ridge HS, 2019
6-foot, 210-pound, strong frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with long arm action. Pachal starts with a slow, deliberate leg lift, then shows an aggressive move to the plate after his balance point. Shows some rhythm with level shoulders and lands square. In one inning of work, his fastball ranged from 76-77 mph. His changeup is his best off-speed pitch at 64-65 mph.
+ Alan Underwood, 1B/RHP, Nederland HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound frame. The right-hander works from a ¾ slot with a longer arm-stroke. Shows good tempo in his delivery with arm working well from back-to-front. His fastball shows slight sinking action at 78-80 mph. He throws his curveball with from 67-70 mph. Underwood maintains good arm speed on his changeup, showing some arm-side fade at 69-72 mph.
