Houston Top Prospect Games: Quick Hits

HOUSTON, TX - On Tuesday, June 6, some of the top talent from around the state of Texas converged The University of Houston’s campus for The Houston Top Prospect Games. Here are some quick hits from the event.

Quinton Martin, OF/RHP, Sweeny HS, 2019
At 5-foot-11, 190-pounds, Martin has an already strong frame with more to come. Martin showed premium arm strength, throwing 94-95 mph from the outfield, and 88 mph on the infield. The right-handed hitter showed rhythm, timing, strength at contact, good bat speed and extension through contact during batting practice. On the mound, the right-handed hitter threw a heavy fastball with arm side run at 84-86 mph, with a 10-4 shape breaking ball at 69-71 mph and feel for a changeup at 76 mph. Martin not only has high end measurables, but he also competes and plays the game hard. During the game he went 2-for-2 with a double the one-hopped the left-centerfield wall and a sharp single.

Jack Driskell, SS/RHP, Stony Point HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound, lean-muscular, long-limbed, high-waisted frame with plenty of room to add strength. Driskell may have been slightly unknown before the event, but that won’t last long, as the rising junior had a stellar all-around day. The shortstop shows clean, easy actions on the infield, working from an athletic, fundamental fielding position with soft hands and mid-line exchanges. Driskell has excellent footwork and throws with a quick arm stroke, accuracy and carry across the diamond. Offensively, the right-handed hitter made hard contact during the game with a double to deep centerfield, and a fly ball on the barrel to right field. Driskell has a clean hand path and a loose, easy finish of the barrel. At the end of the day, he got on the mound and threw his fastball from 85-86 mph with an quick arm stroke. He throws a 12-6 curveball with tight spin and good downward action at 73-74 mph. Look for big things from Driskell this summer.

Brandon Valdez, RHP, Clear Brook HS, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound, still developing frame. Valdez’s fastball velocity may have only been 82-84 mph, but his slider has tight spin and good downward action at 78-80 mph.

Justin Ruble, RHP, Tomball Memorial HS, 2018
Standing 6-foot-5, 220-pounds, Ruble has a strong, projectable frame. The right-hander works from a high slot with a clean arm stroke at 85-88 mph with some downward tilt on his fastball. His slider shows tight spin at 75-76 mph, and his split-finger is a legitimate pitch at 83 mph. College coaches will want to see this projectable right-hander early this summer.

Justin Dibler, RHP/OF, Cypress Springs HS, 2018
6-foot-3, 170-pound, projectable, lean-muscular, high-waisted frame. Dibler ran a 6.97 60-yard dash and threw 87 mph from the outfield. Best of all, the right-hander got on the mound at the end of the day, working from a high slot, he climbed his velocity on sequential pitches from 83-all the way to 88 mph. His slider ranged from 71-76 mph with sharp downward action.

Robert Charles Trevino, SS, Cypress Ranch HS, 2018
6-foot-2, 170-pound, projectable frame with broad shoulders. Trevino has clean, easy actions at shortstop with an accurate arm. The right-handed hitter made hard contact during the game, stroking a double to dead centerfield and lining out sharply to right field.

Marshall Prether, RHP, Conroe HS, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound, wiry frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a quick, clean arm stroke. His fastball has arm side run at 86-87 mph, with a 75-76 mph slider.

Lance Ford, 2B, Kerrville Tivy HS, 2018
Ford is a fast-twitch athlete, standing 5-foot-10, 165-pounds with a lean-muscular frame. Ford ran a 6.96-second 60-yard dash. The left-handed hitter has a solid approach, using the whole field, he laced a ball to the opposite field on the barrel and pulled a hanging curveball to right field. His infield velocity was 88 mph, he showed plus range at second base and handles the start and finish of the pivot with ease. High academic student with an interest in medical school.

Tyler Smith, OF, Schertz Samual Clemens HS, 2018
Smith has strong, muscular frame at 5-foot-10, 185-pounds. He ran a 6.75-second 60-yard dash and made hard contact in batting practice, driving multiple balls to the pull side and hitting a home run. High Academic student.

Jackson Loftin, SS, Klein Collins HS, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound, athletic, high-waisted frame. Loftin backed up his current ranking in the Texas 2018 class on Tuesday, posting a 6.94-second 60-yard dash time and making accurate throws with good backspin at 85 mph across the diamond. Loftin has real presence at shortstop and moves with easy, fluid actions The ball sticks in his glove and he makes clean exchanges in the mid-line of his body.

Garrett Arredondo, 3B/RHP, George Ranch HS, 2019
At 6-foot, 198-pounds, Arrendondo has an already strong frame, but his actions are solid on the infield with good athleticism for his size, and a strong arm (88 mph) across the diamond. His exit velocity was 91 mph which translated well to batting practice where the rising junior made hard contact and drove the baseball. On the mound, the right-hander was 83-84 mph with a clean delivery and a late breaking 74 mph slider.

Jalen Battles, SS/RHP, James Madison HS, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound, athletic, high-waisted, projectable frame. Battles showed smooth actions and a clean accurate arm on the infield. On the mound, the right-hander worked in the 82-83 mph range with his fastball and his curveball was 67-70 mph. With his already projectable frame and smooth actions, Battles is an infielder that college recruiters will want to see this summer.

Kolby Johnson, OF/LHP, Lutheran South Academy, 2018
5-foot-7, 145-pound, fast-twitch, athletic frame. Johnson was all over the field on Tuesday, making plays in the outfield, crashing the infield to back up bases, running a 6.75-second 60-yard dash, and throwing 80-83 mph on the mound from the left side.

Pat Kudelka, RHP, New Braunfels HS, 2018
6-foot-7, 250-pound frame. The right-hander works from a high slot a clean arm stroke and slight head-whack at the end of his delivery. Kudelka lit up the radar gun in his first inning of work, sitting 88-90 mph from the wind-up with a straight fastball, topping out once at 91 mph. His full velo range was 85-91 mph. Although his curveball was only 67 mph with gradual break and he struggled with his fastball command toward the end of his outing, look for big things in the future from this sizeable right-hander.

Mitchell Dickson, C, Marcus HS, 2018
Working on little sleep from the trip to Houston, the starting catcher from this years Regional-Finals team, Dickson stands 6-foot-3, 175-pounds with a lean, projectable frame. Behind the plate he shows easy receiving skills, solid lower-half mobility, and good arm strength at 74 mph. The rising senior runs well for a catcher at 7.05-second 60-yard dash. With his projectable frame, already solid receiving skills, and arm strength, Dickson’s best baseball is certainly still to come.

Westley Schields, SS, Cypress Ranch HS, 2018
Schields continued to impress on Tuesday, showing polished defensive actions with quick footwork, clean exchanges, and an accurate arm. Schields has excellent feel for both positions in the middle of the field, and can start and finish the double play quickly, and accurately. A switch-hitter, Schields has a contact approach and showed the ability to handle the bat.
