X-FACTOR
Louisiana State recruit Blayne Enlow, returns for the Gators in 2017, giving them the premier ace in the state. This past summer was big for Enlow, as he got an invite to the prestigious Tournament of Stars in Cary, NC. Enlow proceeded to dice up the best high school hitters in the country for several days, eventually landing him a spot on the 18U National Team. After going on to win a gold medal for his country, Enlow now looks to bring a state title back to his hometown of Sorrento, LA.
OUTLOOK
Although Enlow is supremely talented, he is certainly not the only gifted prospect the Gators will send out in 2018. Future Games participant, 2018 OF Zane Zeppuhar, is a returning starter and provides the Gators a quality left-handed bat that will flash power, in the heart of the order. A Nicholls State recruit, 2017 IF Ivan Prejean is another middle-of-the-order bat that returns. 2017 OF Briggs Bourgeois also returns in center field for the Gators. A highly athletic and physical 6 feet, 180 pounds, not many know about Bourgeois as a prospect yet, but that could change as dozens of professional scouts will be rolling in during the coming weeks and months.
BOTTOM LINE
St. Amant has a rich history of baseball success, winning state titles and producing big leaguers like Reid Brignac and Ben Sheets. Coach Troy Templet and the 2017 St. Amant Gators certainly look like they will be contenders once again in 2017. However, the Gators will not have an easy path in district 5-5A, as showdowns with area rivals Catholic (BR), Dutchtown and East Ascension always loom large. The return of seven position players and seven pitchers certainly give the Gators a leg up when it comes to experience, as they enter the gauntlet of district 5-5A play.
