Alec Halter C / OF / Dayton Christian, OH / 2025

DAYTON - Wright State was the school Alec Halter wanted all along.

“Wright State was always my number one choice,” the Dayton Christian sophomore said of the university located just 28 minutes from home. “I really like the coaching staff. Coach (Nate) Metzger (the recruiting coordinator) and (head coach Alex) Sogard are the best in the country. They make players there better when they come out and they get players drafted. I also like the overall brotherhood.”

When an offer was presented in January, it did not take Halter long to decide.

“I threw 82 from the crouch and had 96 exit velo in early January at the Bo Dome with Jordan Chiero,” the 24th-rated sophomore in the state reflected back to a performance in front of the PBR Ohio Director of Scouting. “They pulled the trigger when they saw those numbers and offered from that. I slept on it and committed the next day.”

A connection with coaches at the Horizon League university had been ongoing for more than a year.

“I started talking with Wright State in the fall of 2021 when I went to a camp there,” Halter related. “I stayed in touch with them but I was still small and didn’t have the numbers they wanted. In 2022 I still had things to work on.”

Now 5-11 and 175 pounds, a size increase from 5-9 and 130 in late 2021 proved advantageous.

“I worked on putting on 40 pounds in a year-and-a-half,” Halter said. “That helped my velo crouch and bat and my overall quickness. It helped in the weight room and in-game.”

The improved numbers stood out to Wright State.

“They like my dedication and hard work,” pointed out Halter, who had strong interest from Central Florida, Cincinnati, Xavier and the College of Charleston, while also having conversations with Georgia, Missouri, Virginia Tech, Western Michigan and Tulane. “They like that I’m a left-handed hitting catcher who can hit for power and average. They also like my pop time and quickness.”

It was at a PBR Scout Day with Canes Baseball in January of 2022 when the idea of going to the next level became realistic.

“I never have not thought about it,” Halter said. “My dream has always been to play college baseball at any level. When I hit 1.87 pop as a freshman and then hit .418 in high school and was first team all-state and conference Player of the Year, I knew I’d get an opportunity.”

Help proved vital in becoming a commit to Wright State.

“My high school coach, Doug Adams, and my summer coach, Kevin Harleman, made recruitment good for me,” Halter explained. “They did anything to help me not stress out.

“PBR was probably one of the most effective parts of my recruitment,” Halter added. “Coach Chiero helped a lot. I would not have gotten the interest I got without him.”

Ironically, the second-ranked 2025 catcher in Ohio only began going behind the plate three years ago.

“I used to play a lot of infield, but now I’m a catcher and outfielder,” Halter noted. “I picked it up pretty easily. Our catcher got hurt in a tournament and they put me back there. I fell in love with it. It’s by far my favorite position.”

Now Halter will be donning the catcher’s gear in college.

“Both my parents went to Wright State and both are super excited about this,” Halter related about what the feeling was like after making his college commitment. “My team and coaches were there for me. We had practice the day I committed and they all rejoiced with me.”

A 3.9 student at Dayton Christian, the 16-year-old is ready to make an impact at the alma mater of his parents.

“I believe I will work as hard as I can, go in with a humble spirit and try to be the best man and player I can be,” Halter said.

Business or sport management will be the college major for Halter, who is excited about what the future brings.

“I’m looking forward to being part of the best brotherhood in college baseball and everything about Wright State,” Halter concluded. “I knew if I got the opportunity there I had to take it. This will not only make me the best player I can be but the best person and I’m looking forward to it.”
