Gulfport - PBR Mississippi was on hand to see the 6A south state championship game, as the Oak Grove Warriors faced off against the Gulfport Admirals. Gulfport’s offense proved to be too much, as the admirals claim a 6-2 victory advancing to 6A state championship game.
Kris Smith, 2017 RHP, got the start on the mound for Oak Grove and gave up an early run as Castor Lee, 2017 2B, Gulf Coast CC recruit, hits a solo homer in his first plate appearance. Smith would pitch two innings allowing one run on two hits while walking one.
The admirals used four pitchers on the night, combining to only allow two runs. 2018 RHP Holden McHugh started for Gulfport going four innings allowing one run on three hits and walking three. McHugh challenged the zone and was 79-81 mph with his fastball. 2018 OF Kris Jones and 2018 catcher Hayes Maples would both have extra base hits for Oak Grove, showing off potential power driving balls off the wall.
Gulfport's big inning would come in the fourth, as Dylan Ladner, 2018 OF, would drive in two runs when he laces a ball over the left-center field wall. The Admirals would hold a 6-1 lead in the fifth inning, bringing in uncommitted 2018 RHP/C Blake Johnson. Johnson was effective for Gulfport, entering the game with an 86-89 mph fastball touching 90 mph. Johnson would throw one and one-third inning allowing no hits, no runs while walking one and striking two out.
The two homers would prove to be, too much for Oak Grove, as the Gulfport Admirals win 6-2 and claim the title of 6A south state champions, advancing to play the Tupelo Golden Wave for the 6A state title.
