Player Spotlights, Progress Reports, Scouting Blogs, Rankings and Top-Performer Lists, and so much more. Without the players we have nothing, so let’s take this a bit more personal - Get To Know: Our new article feature that hones in on what our Garden State players are up to, what makes them tick, and some real-candid inside access...
Name: Richie Schiekofer
High School: Millburn
Position: OF
State Rank: 34
Commitment: Maryland
PBR: Let's start with your baseball commitment to Maryland. Tell us about the decision-making process? How excited are you to play in the Big Ten?
Schiekofer: I decided on Maryland because I’ve always wanted to go there. I looked at it as a freshman and loved it. The campus is great, and the coaching staff is a bunch of outstanding coaches who are dedicated to making the program successful. They have already done a great job in the last couple of years, having made the Regional and Super Regional in back to back years in 2014 and 2015, and I’m looking forward to helping the team win it all in the next couple of years.
PBR: Baseball has an unbelievable way of positively shaping young man on and off the field. Tell us one life-lesson you have picked up over the years playing the game, and how that life-lesson may impact you later in life?
Schiekofer: Baseball has taught me how to accept failure and stay positive. Baseball does a great job teaching this, mostly because it’s a game of failure; you are considered successful if you get a hit 30% of the time.
Schiekofer: I would say I have five tool potential, because I can run, hit, field, and throw pretty well. I just need to let my body develop because I’m projected to keep growing over the next few years.
PBR: We are knee-deep into the off-season schedule. Tell us about your training, and spring preparation.
PBR: If you could only pick one, who would be your biggest baseball influence and why?
PBR: Name three goals for the upcoming 2017 season.
Schiekofer:
1. Win my second State Championship.
2. Win our school's first County Championship since 1984.
3. Win a State Championship, County Championship, and Conference Championship this year.
PBR: Who is the best player you have played against in your high school career?
Schiekofer: Our first scrimmage last season in high school, we played against (2016 RHP) Luca Dalatri (Christian Brothers Academy HS, NJ. Currently at North Carolina), and he was definitely the best pitcher I’ve played against in high school. I went 1-1 against him, though.
PBR: Do you have any pregame superstitions?
Schiekofer: Just being loose with my teammates.
PBR: What would be your best walk out song?
Schiekofer: My best walk out song would be "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line because country music puts me in a baseball mood for some reason.
