January 9, 2017
As we continue to shape-the-state here in New York, several different unique features will be available on our website. Player Spotlights, Progress Reports, Commitment Blogs, Scouting Blogs, Rankings and Top-Performer Lists, and so much more. Without the players we have nothing, so let’s take this a bit more personal - Get To Know: Our new article feature that hones in on what our Empire State players are up to, what makes them tick, and some real-candid inside access...
Name: Quentin Holmes
High School: Msgr. McClancy
Grad Year: 2017
Position: OF
State Rank: No. 1
National Rank: No. 6
PBR: Tell us about the recruiting process and how you decided on the Bulldogs? How excited are you to play in the SEC?
Holmes: The college selection process was a long one and it came down to about three top schools for me. When I visited Mississippi State though, it was an automatic choice. Everything felt comforting and warm (especially the weather). I felt safe with the people I would be playing with and I was given an offer I couldn't refuse. The term excited doesn't come near my feelings towards playing in the SEC. It's been a dream since before I began searching for schools to attend. Playing in the best conference in the country will be a life changing experience for me that I can't wait to take part in.
PBR: Baseball has an unbelievable way of positively shaping young man on and off the field. Tell us one life-lesson you have picked up over the years playing the game, and how that life-lesson may impact you later in life?
Holmes: A life lesson I have picked up is to do what you do best better than anyone else. Other players and people have different skill sets as well as weaknesses. If you can do what you do best better than others you will be recognized for that and you will be more successful. Worrying about what others can do that you can't will not benefit you. Focusing more on yourself and your skills will bring you forward in your life.
PBR: If you were a baseball scout and just watched yourself play, what would that scouting report look like?
Holmes: A speedster at the top of the lineup, the rangy, physically protectable Holmes definitely has the look of a supremely athletic center fielder. Handles the barrel well and power should come with added strength. Five tool potential for the young Queens athlete.
PBR: This one is for our strictly baseball-minded readers. Tell us about your strengths and weaknesses on the field.
Holmes: My strengths are my speed, my ability to make solid contact on a consistent basis, my good reads in the outfield. I do not think I have any weaknesses but I do have to work on every aspect of my game equally.
PBR: You can only pick one, but who is your biggest baseball influence and why?
Holmes: My father has been since I began playing baseball. He always pushed me to do better than I thought I could. He believed in me more than I did and that motivated me to continue playing. He was only able to play baseball up until his senior year of High School so it was the job of my brother and I to continue the game in the Holmes name.
PBR: We are knee-deep into the off-season schedule. Tell us about your training, and spring preparation.
Holmes: I train at an indoor track Tuesday's and Thursdays. Wednesday's after school and Saturday & Sunday mornings I hit with my trainer. Monday & Friday I workout at the gym after school. Tuesday-Thursday I work out in the morning before school. Tuesday's and Thursday mornings are throwing days for the days of January. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday become throwing days for February and march is when we have a game or practice which would be almost everyday except Sunday's.
PBR: Anyone that plays the game with true passion hopes to leave their own legacy. Tell us how you want to be remembered for playing the game?
Holmes: I want to be remembered as the player that all the coaches warn their players about. The player who is always aggressive and will take advantage of every mistake you make.
