George Mason Has Geppert Excited About His Baseball Future

MASON - Growing up, college baseball was not on the radar of Martin Geppert.

“I wanted to play college football,” the St. Xavier senior explained. “But I quit football to focus on baseball after my freshman year. My junior year I went to a camp at Xavier and the coaches told me I could be a Division I player. That’s when I started to think about college baseball and when I started getting serious about it.”

A summer teammate helped it become a reality.

“George Mason came to watch one of my teammates in a doubleheader at Grand Park,” Geppert reflected back to this past summer. “My teammate threw the game before me. It was against a team with a lot of Power 5 commits and I threw four innings with five Ks, one hit and no runs in my game. They offered a week or two after. We talked two or three times in between. I committed a month after I got my offer.”

The 37th-ranked 2024 right-handed pitcher in Ohio took a visit to the university in Fairfax County, Va., a week before making a decision.

“The campus is beautiful,” Geppert noted. “They have great facilities that are getting better. I met all the coaches and a few of the players. For me, the coaching staff stood out. Coach (Ryan) Ricci has a great pitching mind. Both coach Ricci and (head) coach (Shawn) Camp are alums, so they love the school.

“They think I’m projectable, and that I’m only going to get better,” Geppert added. “They love my pitchability and feel in their program I’m only going to thrive.”

A commitment brought a close to a recruiting process that included offers from Murray State and Toledo while actively talking with Davidson, Ohio State, Army and “a ton” of Ivy League schools.

“The first time coaches reached out to me was after the Top Prospect Games in 2022,” Geppert related in reference to the PBR event held at the beginning of summer. “That was cool. PBR is great for getting numbers out there.”

Soon after, the belief college baseball was going to materialize hit Geppert.

“I really started to think I could do it my junior year,” the 81st-ranked senior in the state explained. “I was only talking to Murray, but then I hit 90 in the fall and more schools began to reach out and I never worried about it after that.”

TJ Galenti at Sequence Biomechanics Performance and Josh Elleman at Evo Sports Performance are credited by Geppert with helping improvement take place.

“It’s been about throwing consistently and improving my mechanics,” Geppert said about getting better on the mound. “When I’ve been at my best has been after I committed. I’m already stronger and throwing harder, getting ready for this fall.”

Business, with a possible double major that would include history, is the plan for Geppert, a 4.2 student at St. Xavier who likes the idea of going to college six hours from home.

“It’s far enough out of my comfort zone but close enough you can drive if needed,” Geppert said.

A commitment has not changed the drive as senior year of high school begins.

“I’m still the same, working as hard if not harder than before,” Geppert related. “But it’s nice to know I have a home to play after high school baseball.”

The 6-5 195-pounder has high expectations when it comes to being part of the Atlantic 10 program.

“I’m looking forward to having that brotherhood and community that baseball provides with a group of pitchers looking to achieve the same thing as you,” Geppert concluded.
