For the second time in as many days Korey Canton (Greece Odyssey) delivered in a walk-off situation as DII Blatter rallied to claim the Upstate Baseball League Championship with an extra innings 5-4 victory over DII Maynard. Canton’s bases loaded single up the middle scored Thomas Cole (Greece Athena) to cap an undefeated season. Cole and Owen Lyons (Geneseo) led the decisive inning with back-to-back walks before Vincent Micalizzi (Penfield) reached on a fielder’s choice when DII Maynard’s attempt to get the lead runner in a sacrifice bunt situation failed. Canton, who drove in the winning with a sacrifice fly in Saturday’s semi-final game, followed with his third hit of the game and fourth of the post-season. Bobby Sellers (Rush-Henrietta) and Kyle Egan (Eastridge) knocked back-to-back RBI singles as DII Maynard grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Michael Contini (Rush-Henrietta) brought home Sellers with an RBI fielder’s choice to push the lead to three in the fourth. But Josh Ferris (Churchville-Chili) highlighted a three-run DII Blatter fifth with a two-out single up the middle that scored Christian Blatter (McQuaid). Dan Tirabassi (Rush-Henrietta) also came home on the play to knot the game. DII Maynard regained the lead in the sixth when Nick Stodgell (Brighton) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Lyons led the DII Blatter sixth with a ground-rule double and scored on a Joey Alphonse (Greece Olympia) RBI fielder’s choice. Gage Ziehl (Penfield) struck out the side and hurled a scoreless eighth inning in relief for the win. Jadon Masucci (Webster Thomas) started and fanned eight over five innings in a losing effort.  

DI Christiano 6 DI Wiktorski 0
John Gassler (Pittsford Sutherland) retired the first 17 batters he faced and finished with a one-hitter as DI Christiano took an early en route to claiming Upstate Baseball League Championship at Basket Road Field on Sunday. Gassler struck out 13 and faced one over the minimum in a complete-game effort. The left-hander allowed just two balls out of the infield and induced seven ground ball outs. He threw 87 pitches – 58 for strikes and fanned the side in order in the third and seventh innings. Gassler’s battery mate, Tyler Holmes (Fairport), finished 3-for-3 on the day including an RBI double to straight center as DI Christiano grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Tommy Baxter (Webster Schroeder) started the frame with a single up the middle. Sam Velletri (Brockport) put runners on the corners with an opposite field base hit, and Jorge Oropeza (Greece Athena) brought home the first run of the game with an RBI ground out. Kevin Canton (Greece Odyssey) plated Zach Ochs (Rush-Henrietta) with a two-out single to right field to push the lead to three. Holmes made it a 4-0 contest with a two-out RBI single in the third. But the story of the game was clearly Gassler. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound hurler had a perfect game working with two outs in the sixth before Andrew Sanchez (Rush Henrietta) reached out and slapped a first-pitch fastball into right field for DI Wiktorski’s first hit of the game. Gassler set down the first 10 he faced in his previous outing a five-inning effort on August 23^rd. Sunday’s win gave the southpaw a measure of redemption as DI Wiktorski had tagged him for four runs on August 12^th and three on August 2^nd. He also surrendered three runs (one earned) in a loss to DI Wiktorski on August 21^st. Gassler finished the season 4-1 overall in seven appearances. He struck out 38, walked 12 and allowed eight walks over 23.2 innings of work.
