Winfield 3, Nitro 2
In a well pitched game on both sides Winfield was able to hold off the Nitro, No. 5 in the most recent Metro News AA Power Rankings. The Generals' Evan Clay got the win going the distance striking out four while not walking a batter and allowing just six hits. His two runs allowed were both earned. Nitro starter Jacob Ilar was also able to finish what he started, going six innings, striking out five, while allowing three earned runs on seven hits. He did walk three which proved to be costly.
Winfield was unable to capitalize on an early scoring opportunity in the top of the first following a walk and single to right field as Samuel Estes was caught trying to steal home.
Nitro opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with Mike Stone scoring on a hit batsman. Clay was able to escape further damage with the bases loaded and nobody out however by getting the next three hitters on a fly out, strike out and pop up on the infield.
Trailing 1-0 Winfield pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third. The Generals' Tate Hancock connected for one of his two doubles following a couple of free passes issued by Ilar.
Following a quiet fourth, the Wildcats tied the game at two in the top of the fifth on three consecutive singles by Jason Douglas, Ryan Hill and Mike Stone. The lead was short lived though as the Generals responded with what proved to be the winning run in the home half of the same inning. Tate Hancock again doubled, this time to center field, scoring Clay who had reached on a single to right field. That was all Winfield would need as Nitro threatened in the sixth but could not score.
