Game of the Day: George Washington at Ripley

https://archive-it.org/k12/graphics/6_09/gwlogo.gifDominant pitching by Coastal Carolina recruit Jonathan Blackwell (No. 2 in the current WV Class of 2019 rankings) as well as some timely hitting led George Washington, No. 9 in the most recent Metro News AA Power Rankings, over No. 3 Ripley.  Blackwell one hit the Vikings through five while striking out 11 and not walking a batter.

George Washington opened the scoring by playing some small ball in the top of the third. Lead-off hitter John Holden walked and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  He eventually scored without a hit following a ground out and passed ball.

Grant WellsThe Patriots again went to small ball tactics in the third to extend the lead.  Grant Wells (No. 1 in the current WV Class of 2019 rankings) singled and was bunted over to second.  He then scored on a base hit to center field by Aidan Johnson (No. 5 in the current WV Class of 2019 rankings).

After extending the lead on a Brayden McCallister triple and Preston Taylor sacrifice fly in the fifth the Patriots put things well out of reach in the top of the seventh. George Washington scored three runs with the big damage being done by Elias Miller's two run double to right. Rocky Ford recorded the only hit for Ripley a single in the second.

With the win George Washington moves to 5-0 on the young season. Wells continued his torrid start to the season. The sophomore in ow 10-for-16 at the plate with nine runs scored.
