Jefferson 2, Bridgeport 1
Bridgeport visited Jefferson yesterday in what has become one of the top regular season games of the year statewide. The two programs have combined for three state championships in the past two years and are both positioned for deep playoff runs in 2016. Both teams began the year ranked No. 1 in the Metro News Power Rankings and have held the top spot in AAA and AA all season.
The game lived up to its billing with solid pitching and a pair of key two-out hits leading to a 2-1 Jefferson victory. Bridgeport starter Hunter Haddix (6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) and Jefferson starter Bradley Davis (7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) were dominant.
Jefferson was finally able to get to Haddix in the bottom of the 4th. Charlie Barnholt led off the inning with a double and scored the game's first run when Cameron Alvarez singled with two outs. Alvarez advanced to second on the throw to the plate and scored one batter later when Bailey Dodson (2-2, RBI) came up with a second straight two-out RBI single.
Bridgeport cut the deficit in half in the 6th inning when Joseph Dodrill singled to start the inning. Dante Bonamico followed with a bunt single and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Hefner. Elijah Drummond drove Dodrill in with a sacrifice fly but Davis was able to escape further damage when he got Brine Takahashi to fly out to end the inning.
Bradley completed his masterful outing by setting the Indians down in order in the 7th on a pair of ground outs and a strikeout. The Potomac State recruit in now 6-0 on the season with an ERA just north of 1.00.
