In what could be a preview of a District I class 2A playoff game, the visiting Lions survived a bottom of the seventh inning rally to hold on in this Bicentennial Athletic League contest. Entering the final frame, NH-S held a 5-1 lead, but a three-run home run from Lehigh-bound third baseman Tony Gallo (right) pulled the Tide within one. A single to shallow center put the tying run on base, but back-to-back pop outs ended the threat and the ballgame.
The early part of the game was played briskly, with both NH-S sophomore Matt Benda and DP senior Danny Brace economizing their pitches and facing a minimum number of batters through two innings. The Lions broke through in the top of the third when a single and two hit-by-pitches preceded a two-RBI base hit from senior second baseman Dylan Waterman. The Tide finally scratched one across against Benda in the fifth on a bases loaded, 0-2 hit-by-pitch, but a subsequent line out to third base minimized the damage.
NH-S answered right back on a leadoff home run from senior shortstop Nate Wilson and then extended the lead on an RBI single from senior center fielder Tim Heffernan. Wilson relieved Benda in the bottom half of the inning and, after retiring the first two hitters, escaped a bases loaded situation on a ground ball back to him. The Lions then pushed across what would end up being the deciding run in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI single from Wilson.
