Game Notes: CBC comes back to defeat No. 11 SLUH, 5-4

CBC came from behind to defeat SLUH 5-4 in an error filled game on Thursday afternoon in a big Metro Catholic Conference matchup. The win improves the young CBC team to an overall 12-5 record and 4-1 conference record, thrusting the Cadets into the driver’s seat. SLUH falls to 13-5 and 1-3 in conference. Junior RHP Robert  Plohr picked up the win, with a gritty outing surrendering eight hits and allowing only two earned runs. Jaelen Gilkey had the big hit, a two RBI bases loaded double in the sixth inning to put CBC ahead for good.

“I came up with the approach that I would take until I got a strike, since Paul (Sullivan) walked on four straight balls,” said Gilkey on the at bat that put CBC up 5-4.  “As soon as I hit it I knew it was a good hit. I had a feeling I was going to have a chance to have an impact in this game.”

  • CBC scored five runs on five hits, with Justin Paulsen collecting two hits and scoring two runs.

  • Starting pitcher Robert Plohr, the No. 14 ranked player in the Class of 2013, sat 84-86 mph and flashed a hard breaking ball. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound pitcher improved his record to 3-1 on the season, and should be a catalyst to CBC’s run to a conference championship.

  • The double for Gilkey was his third of the season, and his fifth and sixth RBI. Gilkey is the son of former MLB player Bernard Gilkey.

  • CBC scored four runs in the sixth inning. C Joe Schrimpf led the inning off reaching on an error. A single by 1B Paulsen would move Schrimpf to third. A one out walk to CF Bobby Lang loaded the bases and Schrimpf came around to score on a bases loaded, four pitch RBI walk to 2B Paul Sullivan. Gilkey’s drive to left field scored Paulsen and Lang, while Sullivan scored when the SLUH left fielder bobbled the ball, putting CBC up for good, 5 to 4.

  • CBC had only one senior starter, 2B Paul Sullivan.  The rest of the starting line up consisted of six juniors  (C Schrimpf, RHP Plohr, 1B Paulsen, SS Mike Venturella, CF Bobby Lang, LF Jaelen Gilkey), one sophomore (3B Jake Burger) and two freshmen (RF Matt Vierling, DH Ian Nelson).

  • The two teams combined for seven errors.

“The finish of this game was MCC baseball,” said CBC head coach Mason Horne. “We showed our age in the first few innings, but a lot of credit goes to starter Robert Plohr who showed a lot of courage and kept competing when there were things he couldn’t control.”
