Fultz Staying Close To Home At Wright State
SPRINGFIELD - “I always knew Wright State was a destination.”
Living 25 miles away from campus was just one of the factors Patrick Fultz mentioned in regard to what stood out in his decision to make a commitment to the Horizon League school.
“The coaching staff is great, I really like those guys,” the Springfield Shawnee sophomore said. “They’ve had 15 guys drafted in the past five years.”
There was also the importance of family.
“I’ll be close enough for my family to come see me play, but still far enough away to develop as an individual,” the 24th-rated 2022 in the state reasoned.
Fultz, who credits Seth Gray - a friend of his older brother - with helping him get to know the program he grew up near, attended baseball camps at the school including one in January that ended in an offer.
“They like my ability to hit the ball all over the field,” the left-handed hitting Fultz explained. “They also like my work ethic. They could tell I can develop a good frame.”
Now 6-0 and 175 pounds, Fultz has worked hard to make improvements in his game of late.
“I shot up and slimmed down,” Fultz pointed out. “I was always a middle-away guy and I’m still able to do that as a left-hander, but now I have more power and am able to pull the ball.”
The second-ranked sophomore second baseman in Ohio sees additional improvement in his future.
“I need better foot speed,” Fultz admitted. “I need to become faster. I also want to improve my arm strength. Those are the things I’m working on the most.”
A middle infielder and third baseman with a 3.85 GPA, the potential business or education college major sees a lot he can bring to the program at Wright State,
“My IQ,” Fultz proclaimed about what he will provide at the next level. “I bring a lot of intelligence. I also bring the ability to command the field and communicate how we’re going to execute.”
Brad Arm, a travel coach, along with Matt Talarico, who worked with Fultz in the fall, have been influential in helping him get to where he is in the game now as has Jason Gray, Seth’s father. Parents, Billy and Heather Fultz, have also played a major role.
“My father is one of the best coaches I’ve had my whole life,” Fultz said. “He knows the game.”
Ohio State and Miami are other colleges that had shown the most interest in the eighth-ranked uncommitted sophomore in the state at the time of his decision.
“I felt confident and knew Wright State was the place for me,” Fultz related. “Part of me wanted to wait and see what else I could have gotten, but I just knew Wright State would develop me and get me where I want to go.”
After all, college baseball has been a destination that Fultz has had for a long time.
“My dream as a kid was to play Division I baseball,” Fultz reflected. “As soon as the opportunity presented itself I was excited. This past year talking with coaches and talking to guys that had committed .. I knew that if I could hang with those guys I had a shot, too.”
Making a commitment with COVID-19 limiting interaction on the field, Fultz admits adds to the comfort level of making a decision now.
“It’s a relief to me, especially with everything going on now,” Fultz said. “ I don’t have to worry about a big summer now, and that’s if we get to play.”
