Last August, the 2016 class took center stage at the Prep Baseball Report Future Games, where many of the top uncommitted rising juniors in the PBR coverage area competed in Indianapolis. Fast forward a year later, and three of the top standouts at the Future Games – C Cooper Johnson (Carmel Catholic HS, IL), RHP Brenden Heiss (Jacobs HS, IL) and 1B/LHP Joey Wentz (Shawnee Mission East HS, KS) – will now be competing in the Under Armour All-America Game on Saturday at Wrigley Field.
All three players began to cement their statuses as high-level national prospects a year ago. For Johnson, he established himself as arguably the top defensive catcher in the country last year, and the Mississippi recruit has since proven that time and again this summer.
For Heiss, who was relatively unknown in the national scouting community last year, the athletic 6-foot-1 Arkansas recruit opened eyes when he broke the Future Games record with a fastball that topped at 95 mph.
And the 6-foot-5 Wentz, he was predominately known for his left-handed pitching prowess. But at the Future Games, Wentz showed off his loose left-handed swing that broke a Future Games record of 101 exit velocity. Shortly after the Future Games, Wentz committed to Virginia.
You can see Johnson, Heiss, Wentz and many other of the top prospects in the country in person this Saturday at Wrigley Field at 3 p.m. For a sneak peak, here’s a look at the three players’ videos from last year’s Future Games:
