The Freshmen Free Showcase was held on Saturday, January 21 at Athletic Performance Inc in Gambrills, Maryland. Close to 60 freshmen from across the state came to perform in front of the PBR Maryland staff. Today we give you early thoughts after letting the event marinate for a day.
C Jack Bulger of DeMatha showed quickly why he was worthy of making the initial Top 50 of the PBR Overall class of 2020 rankings. Bat speed and power were immediately present on the young talent during his BP session, making loud contact and driving the baseball. Buler also showed off his arm strength and quick release getting as low as 1.88 from behind the plate throwing it. There is still room to grow making for an exciting young prospect.
It looks like Cape Henlopen has another talented young player to their already talented roster for the spring season, with freshmen Jake Gelof. Gelof, the young brother of Maryland’s top ranked 2018 Zack Gelof, showed off his athleticism and ability as a position player with sound actions and an already strong arm from both the outfield and infield. Gelof showed the versatility to play multiple positions and had a clean swing at the plate with good hands and looks to have some future power potential as he continues to grow. Gelof pitches as well and will be one to keep an eye on the mound also, as he did not throw this weekend.
Came away very impressed with the development of freshmen Bobby Duffy of North Harford HS. The left handed hitting shortstop has an already strong and athletic frame for his age. He showed a smooth, level swing path with fast bat speed at the plate and looks like he could develop some power down the road as well. He showed good arm strength from the infield and looks like he will fit in well either at short or third down the road.
Sticking with the left handed hitting infielder theme, 1B Josh Moylan looks to be an interesting potential power threat out of the freshmen class. His 6-foot-2, 200-pound solid frame already shows his physicality at his young age. He took good BP on the day and was more than capable around the bag during defense.
