CHICO, CA - We made a trip up to California's Far North region on 2/1/20, one of our January stops on the road to the California State Games. The event had a roster of nearly 40 players in attendance. As per usual, the players were put through a pro-style workout that included the 60-yard sprint, a round of batting practice, defensive workouts at respective positions, and concluded with bullpen sessions for pitchers.
Most of the players were attending their first ever PBR California event, giving us a first look at these players in a showcase setting. Some we had seen in previous game action and a couple we had seen in other PBR events, as well at the Area Code tryouts last summer.
We've previously posted our Quick Hits, Stats, Catchers, MIFs, & OF/3B/1B. Click on the player's name for access to his full profile, including all reports and videos we have for that player. Players who were included in the Quick Hits piece are NOT included within the positional reports.
PITCHERS
Scouting Report
Scouting Report
Delivery: LHP - Slight cross body stride w/slight heel first and open foot, drifts away from rubber, timing of separation/stride can improve, given young long body type he's got impressive body control, could work to incorporate post leg/knee better
Arm Action: High 3/4 slot, easy arm action, smooth on backside w/some slight depth below waist, chance to develop good stuff w/his arm action
FB: 74-76 - Quality arm side run, some what up (timing of delivery), can shove it in vs RHH
CB: 60-61 - Big bender w/1/7 type break, given his high release it's got a chance to be steep
CHG: 70-72 - Threw it was feel that indicates a quality change-up will show up as the mechanics tighten up/evolve
Scouting Report
Delivery: RHP - On-lilne stride, rolls outside plant foot losing momentum to 1B line, controlled down the slope, decent rhythm, drifts a bit away from the rubber before engaging post leg/knee, maintains good head/upper body stability, keeps hands high which limits ability to create rhythm
Arm Action: Short backside like that of a C/3B getting to high 3/4 slot, has enough arm speed/strength to develop quality stuff
FB: 76-78 - Flashed ability to create down angle, came out of hand easy, velocity jump will come
CB: 67-68 - Small break and often backed up on him as fingers weren't getting to front of ball
CHG: 70-72 - Late run/dive, impressive feel/action particularly given his status as a freshman
Scouting Report
Delivery: RHP - High tuck knee lift, on-line stride, lands w/good stability, good body control throughout the delivery, calm head w/clean mechanics, not much use of backside leg as he leaves the rubber, there is more power available to him w/some adjustments
Arm Action: Arm swing/hand slightly behind body out of the glove, gets to high 3/4 slot, arm works easy, slight adjustment on separation could unlock some more arm speed
FB: 70-71 - Fairly straight but thrown with feel and looks to be a strike thrower
CB: 60-62 - Spike grip, gets fair amount of spin on it, big 11/5 shape w/some rolling depth
CHG: 64-65 - Appeared comfortable w/CHG, flashed some arm side fade and depth
Scouting Report
Delivery: RHP - Aggressively works to create power in the delivery, very slightly open stride w/early clearing of front hip, creates rhythm, pulls front shoulder & swims lead arm which creates follow through toward 1B line, creates power off the rubber w/strong back knee mechanics
Arm Action: Compact backside arm action, clean out of the glove, keeps fingers on top of the ball well, creates good arm speed, overhand slot
FB: 78-80 - Flashed hard late run when hand got to best release points, lost a few up in zone
SL: 63-64 - Fairly late break w/hints of two-plane action and occasional depth
CHG: 66-67 - Thrown w/feel & aggressive release, big late fade, will be a high quality pitch
Scouting Report
Delivery: RHP - Rhythmic delivery w/good coordination, high easy knee lift, compact at the height of the knee lift, collapses back leg over rubber which saps some lower body power, kicks lead leg out as he gets to an on-line stride w/slight open foot landing
Arm Action: Long backside w/full extension, hooks on backside w/hand under the ball, gets to a 3/4 release, arm speed looks capable of more velocity than he creates
FB: 70-72 - Very slight run, multiple strikes though occasional misses in the zone
CB: 61-62 - Sweeping slurve-like break w/continuous rolling action through the zone
CHG: 65-67 - Thrown w/feel and enough fade to get ground balls
