This weekend James Madison University hosted a Super 6 tournament, featuring six teams of primarily 2019s, 2020s, and 2021s from the Richmond and Tidewater area. We were on site most of the day Saturday, here are some quick notes on the players we saw:

 

-Midlothian 2021 LHP Zach Vanderslice threw from a higher slot, sat 68-71, touched as high as 73. Lanky frame with room to add strength and velocity. Curveball was 58-59.

-Mills Godwin 2021 RHP Chance Muir sat 72-74, touching 76 with some sink to his ball. Curveball was 61-65. Lankier athletic frame, should add velocity as he fills out. Showed some barrel ability at the plate and used whole field.

-James River 2021 RHP Ryan Portes was 74-75 on the mound.

-Tidewater Academy 2020 3B Ronald Jones showed some batspeed and power potential, barreling multiple balls with authority.

-Clover Hill 2020 SS David Coppedge (Virginia) looks the part with an athletic projectable frame. At short, clean actions and quick feet, fields with soft hands, strong arm with loose arm action. At plate, quick bat with a short swing, plenty of power potential to grow into.

-James River 2020 LHP Connelly Early was 74-76 from a higher slot.

-Clover Hill SS Corey Adams has a lanky frame and is a raw athlete with a lot of upside. Quick feet and hands on the infield, rangy frame could work well in the outfield too. At the plate, swing needs work but hands are very quick and he is short to the ball, with the potential to develop a lot of power.

-Benedictine 2021 SS Jay Woolfolk is a multi-sport athlete who starts at quarterback as a freshman. Very good actions at short, has potential to have a strong arm, very fast exchange and good hands. Quick short swing, uses whole field and showed ability to barrel consistently, power potential. Woolfolk has massive upside.

-Matoaca 2021 C Tanner Clements showed good blocking and receiving skills behind the plate. Put a 2.35 in-game throw on the corner of the bag, showed a quick release, pop times will improve as arm strengthens. Bat has potential as well with some quickness.

-Thomas Dale 2021 C Johnny Oates showed athleticism and an advanced bat with home run power to his pull side already present.

-Benedictine 2020 LHP Patrick White was 73-75 from a higher arm slot. Showed a 12/6 curveball that was 63-64.

-Miller School 2019 RHP Nate Burton sat 78-81, touched 83. Showed a change-up with good armspeed at 76-77 and a hard curveball with good armspeed at 65-69. Showed command of all three until he tired.

-Manchester 2019 3B Tyler Garner showed a short line drive swing with some batspeed and a good approach, working gap to gap with some doubles power.

-Manchester 2019 LHP Eli Parks worked at 80-83, touching 84, throwing from a lower three-quarters arm slot and occasionally dropping down to sidearm. Showed and effective slider and climbed up a bit for a curveball as well. Picked up six strikeouts in four innings of work with just two walks.

-Prince George 2019 C Justin Starke (VMI) was 2.01-2.09 on his between inning pops, getting up to 76 with a quick release and a loose arm with accuracy. Good blocker and receiver. At the plate has a quick bat and short stroke, showed good approach using whole field and barreled ball consistently.

-Stafford 2019 OF Michael Tolson (Old Dominion) has a ton of athleticism and a short quick stroke with the potential to bring a lot of speed as well. Toolsy raw athlete.

-Manchester 2019 LHP Zane Eggleston was 77-80, touching 81, throwing from a lower slot with a deceptive delivery. Good slider with hard late break was 68-73.

-Ocean Lakes 2020 SS Scott Hinds has good actions at short, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a loose arm action. Short line drive swing at plate but needs to get stronger.

-Cox 2022 Ethan Anderson has a physically mature athletic frame. He hits form the right side with a good swing and some batspeed, has a lot of power potential.

-Chantilly 2020 C Shane Dux showed some speed and athleticism, he has a short line drive swing. Behind the plate, threw a 2.20 in game pop and was 2.12-2.25 between innings, velocity was 75.

-Page County 2021 LHP TR Williams has a lanky frame and sat 76-79, touching 80, from a low slot. Curveball had good armspeed and was 64-70. Changed up delivery to mess with hitters’ timing.

-Salem (Virginia Beach) 2020 LHP Colton Robinson was 77-79 from a higher arm slot. Showed three pitch mix, including fading change at 72-75 and sharp curveball at 70-71.

-Kellam 2020 OF Jordan Smith has a ton of athleticism and has a very high ceiling as he develops. Could have a very loud speed tool.
