Pembroke Pines-- In the nightcap of day two of the Falcon Challenge featured this week's Game of the Week matchup of preseason No. 18 Calvary Christian vs No. 25 Flanagan. The matchup would feature 2017 Vanderbilt commit LHP Jake Eder against 2019 Florida commit Roberto Pena. In front of dozens of scouts, neither Pena or Eder disappointed. Pena being an underclassman isn’t currently the focus of the pro scouts, but definitely continues to put himself on the radar highlighting his 86-89 mph with a 74-76 mph slider with a lot of potential.
Eder did not disappoint those in attendance in his first outing of 2017. The big lefty came out electric in the first showing a clean and easy delivery and as he found his timing and extension, the fastball climbed from 90-93 mph to touching 94 and 95 mph. Eder settled in and pitched in the 90-93 range while showing a curveball that flashed above average depth at times at 71-73 and an occasional 71 mph changeup.
The Eagles offense would strike first in the third following back-to-back doubles by Ben Rozenblum and George De la Fe and an RBI single from Jake Holland, Calvary would take a 2-0 lead and not look back.
Eder would leave the game after 3.2 innings while allowing no runs on two hits while striking out eight. Indian River recruit Jack Durkin would take over from there going 2.1 innings giving up no runs, with one hit while striking out four. 2018 LHP Timothy Watkins would come in for the 7th and shut down the Falcons in order, taking the save and preserving the sutout and 3-0 win for Calvary.
Flanagan’s offense was led by the leadoff man Tyler Evans who went 2-4 on the day with two singles.
