In December, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC hosted the End of Year Showcase at Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen, Virginia. Players from all over the Commonwealth were on display as well as a few of our neighbors from Maryland and Delaware. In the coming weeks we will go into detail about what we saw that day, today we begin with a breakdown of the pitchers.
Scott Crosson, LHP, Hickory, 2020
Crosson is 5-10 and has an athletic frame, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with smooth drop and drive delivery. Short, free arm action, normal effort. Shoulders level and closed, lands closed with an athletic finish. Fastball sat 75-77, touched 78 with some armside run. Change-up had decent armspeed and hard sink, running 67-69. Curveball had sharp 1/7 break, running 65-67. Showed ability to throw strikes with all three pitches.
Canon Davies, RHP, Orange, 2019
Davies is 5-9 and has an athletic frame with a strong lower half. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with an explosive drop and drive delivery. Arm action is short and he generates velocity with some effort. Shoulders are slightly level and uphill as strides to a square landing with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 70-73 with some late sink, two-seamer showed more run. Curveball had sharp 11/5 break and decent armspeed, running 57-59. Showed a slider with tighter, late break that was 11/5 to downer. Change-up had good armspeed, running 65-67 with hard fade.
Emir Garrett, RHP, Appoquinimink (DE), 2017
Garrett is 5-10 with an athletic frame and a strong lower half. Throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long, free arm action that is quick, some effort to delivery. Shoulders are level and on line, strides to a slightly closed landing with an athletic finish. Fastball was 82-84, touching 85 with late armside run. Curveball had sharp 11/5 break, running 70-71 with decent armspeed. Change-up had good armspeed and sink action, sitting 77-78.
Garrett Johnson, LHP, Norfolk Christian, 2020
Johnson is 6-0 with a lankier frame, smooth drop and drive delivery, throwing from a three-quarters arm slot. Longer, loose arm action, normal effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, square landing with athletic finish. Fastball was 70-73 with some armside run. Change-up had decent armspeed and fading action, sitting 63-65. Curveball had 1/7 break and was 58-62.
John Mark Killmon, SS, Nandua, 2018
Killmon is 5-11 with a lankier frame, drop and drive delivery throwing from a three-quarters arm slot. Short arm action that is quick and free, some effort to his delivery. Shoulders uphill and slightly closed, landing on line with a slight fall off and recoil. Fastball sat 75-76 with heavy sink. Change-up had good armspeed, running 69-70 with fading action. Curveball was 62-63 with 12/6 action.
Noah Kucenski, RHP, Ocean Lakes, 2019
Kucenski is 6-2 with a lanky frame, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long, loose arm action that is quick, normal effort. Shoulders slightly uphill and on line, stride on line with a hard fall off finish. Fastball was 75-77 with slight late run. Curveball had hard downer action and good armspeed, running 66-68. Change-up had good armspeed and fading action, running 71-73.
Gardner Meeks, RHP, Norfolk Christian, 2020
Meeks is 5-9 with an athletic frame, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot. Long arm action and normal effort. Shoulders are level and closed as strides to a slightly closed landing with an athletic finish. Fastball was 73-75 with heavy run. Change-up had good armspeed, running 66-68 with heavy run to it. Slider had late 10/4 action, running 62-63. Curveball had sharp 11/5 action and was 60-62. Good command of all his pitches.
