Elite Squad Upgrade: 2020 Breakdown

Over 200 players took part in the Elite Squad tryout at Broward college from August 12th- August 13th. These players took part in a pro-style workout and a simulated games. Below we take a look at the 2020 graduates who took advantage of the PBR Upgrade during the tryout.

Darren Leon C / 3B / St. Brendan, FL / 2020

Stocky, 5-foot-6, 155 pound the right-handed hitter has a simple setup.He is aggressive and swings with intent. He has above average bat speed, with a level to slightly uphill path through the zone. Generates gap-to-gap power and will continue to get better as he grows and becomes stronger. Defensively, he has some stiffness and a high setup. The hands work well and the footwork is sound and will continue to improve with flexibility. Pop times ranged from 2.12-2.13. 

 

Gregory Garcia C / OF / Somerset Academy, FL / 2020

The right handed hitting catcher uses a simple, toe to heel load and gets quality separation. He tends to fight against his front side and not fully clear his backside, but is short and level through the zone. Defensively, the actions work, but will need to be sped up some as he continues to get comfortable behind the plate. His hands work well, but will cut the pop time down from the current 2.28 with quicker feet and a improved catch to release. 

 

Wyatt Holiday 1B / RHP / Chaminade, FL / 2020

A big strong left handed hitting first baseman. He has a simple, rocker load and clears his hops well. Generating bat speed from a strong lower half he shows present pull side power from the left side, with more power to come. On the mound he shows a strong, long  over-the-top arm action. Fastball worked 82-84 mph with some heavy life and a curveball at 69 mph and a changeup at 75 mph 

 

Connor Roth OF / Jupiter, FL / 2020

Really athletic outfielder. Ran a 7.12 60 with a quality gate. Comes through the ball well in the outfield and tracks down the ball well. Wide, balanced setup. The right handed hitter has a short, level, line drive swing. There is present bat speed and feel for the barrel that will continue to improve as he continues to get stronger.  

Jaylon Villarreal C / 3B / Palm Beach Central , FL / 2020

6-foot-1, 205 pound stocky, strong lower half. The right-handed hitter has a toe tap load with an aggressive approach. He has above average bat speed for his class, with a line line drive swing and feel for the barrel. Defensively, he has some stiffness with present strength. The best pop time was 2.07 and will continue to improve as he increases flexibility. 

 

Nicholas Del Prado 1B / 3B / Florida Christian, FL / 2020

6-foot-1, 210 pounds. Offensively, the right handed hitter has a strong lower half. He stays balanced and uses the lower half well. The path is level and there is present strength. He shows some pull side power and will have the chance to hit for power as he continues to grow and become stronger. Defensively, he topped out at 82 mph from the outfield and showed solid defensive actions at first base. 

 

Devin Jeluso C / Jupiter, FL / 2020

The right-handed hitting catcher starts from an upright stance. The hands drop during the load and can get rotational. He has present bat speed and when the front side is strong and works through the ball he shows gap-to-gap power. Defensively, there are a lot of moving parts and a long arm action. Although he has a lot of quick twitch and a strong arm with his best pop time being 1.97. 

 

Matthew Menendez C / 1B / Monsignor Edward Pace , FL / 2020

6-foot, 170-pound lean, athletic catcher showed a lot of quick twitch defensive ability. His hands work and will continue to improve as he gets in better positions. He has quick feet, transfer and a strong arm resulting in a 1.90 pop time. Offensively, the right handed hitter has a small leg lift and stride trigger, He tends to come out of his lower half and create length in the path. There is present strength, but the bat will continue to improve as he learns to use his strong lower half and become shorter to the ball. 

 

Michael Rodriguez C / 3B / West Broward, FL / 2020

5-foot-10, 155 pound right handed hitting catcher. Ran a 7.94 60 yard dash. Offensively, he has a slightly uphill path and could improve the present strength with a stronger front side. Defensively his hands work well. The feet will continue to improve and the best pop time was 2.30.  

 

Michael Phillips RHP / 3B / Pine Crest School, FL / 2020

6-foot, 160 pound RHP/3B. The right handed hitter could benefit from a stronger lower half. Has a simple, short, level swing. Defensively he topped out at 63 mph across the infield. On the mound, he has soe drop and drive in the delivery with an over the top arm action. The fastball ranged from 71-73 mph and a curveball at 67-68 mph. 

 

Brendan Fogel SS / SS / South Plantation , FL / 2020

5-foot-7, 150 pound infielder. The right handed hitter has  simple setup and a level swing and could benefit from better use of the lower half. Defensively, he shows quality action in the infield. A quick first step he works under control to the ball and works through the ball with confidence rhythm and soft hands. On the mound he lands slightly closed and throws from a 3/4 slot. The fastball ranged from 78-79, curveball from 68-69 mph and a changeup at 74-75 mph.
