Eastern PA Top Prospect Games Analysis: Black Team

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania began this week with the 2017 Eastern PA Top Prospect Games on June 13 and 14. Eighty prospects from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Jersey gathered for two days of nine inning games and showcase activities at Cooper Park on the campus of Millersville University. Today we begin our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at those that participated as a member of the Black Team.

TOP PROSPECT

Hunter HallHunter Hall, 3B/OF, Oxford Area HS, PA, Class of 2018
6-foot-2, 215-pounder stood out physically with impressive measurables across the board running a 6.94 60-yard dash, showcasing 81 mph arm strength and fluid actions at third base and flashing an event record 101 mph bat exit velocity.

Currently ranked No. 93 in the PA Class of 2018, Hall put together a very solid two days that will likely see him make a jump in the next rankings update. 
Over the course of two games the right-handed hitter went 4-for-8 at the plate with a double. Hall showcased excellent body control for a player his size defensively while displaying the ability to make throws from multiple arm angles.

Tommy Bramley, 2018, C/IF, Lower Dauphin HS (PA)
5-foot-9, 170-pound left-handed hitter starts from a narrow, open stance and displays rhythmic actions through impact with present pop to the pull side.  Hands work well through the zone with a short path and he continues to display the ability to create back spin.  Registered an 86 mph bat exit velocity and went 4-for-7 with a triple and two walks in games action.  Triple nearly left the park in right field.  Athletic backstop ran a 6.93 60-yard dash and showcased pop times of 2.08-2.18 with 73 mph arm strength out of the crouch.

Michael Defant, 2019, OF, Downingtown East HS (PA)
6-foot, 150-pound athletic right-handed hitter with room to add to his frame.  Starts from an open stance and showcased ability to barrel the baseball consistently to all fields during solid round of batting practice.  Registered an 85 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 6.88 60-yard dash.  Flashed athletic defensive actions with the ability to cover plenty of ground along with above average arm strength of 88 mph.

Jake Geissler, 2018, 3B/RHP, West Chester Rustin HS (PA)
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitter showcased sound swing mechanics from a square stance with an 87 mph bat exit velocity.  Geissler starts from a high hands load and utilizes a short, leg-lift stride to initiate his swing.  The primary third baseman flashed 77 mph arm strength and the potential to be a solid defender at the next level.

The righty also sat 78-80 from a high 3/4 arm slot during three innings of game action. Geissler displayed feel for a 65 mph curveball and a changeup that sat 68-70 with a slower arm speed.

Trey Law, 2019, SS/2B, Cedar Cliff HS (PA)
5-foot-9, 135-pound left-handed hitter with solid all-around skills that should continue to develop through physical maturity.  Starts from an open stance and utilizes a leg-hang stride with a high hands load to initiate his swing.  Shows fluid actions throughout swing path with solid lower half actions leading to a 77 mph bat exit velocity.  Went 2-for-8 with a double in game action and ran a 7.51 60-yard dash.  Bounces around the infield with solid actions.  Displayed a quick release and the ability to make throws from multiple arm angles with developing 73 mph arm strength. 

Ryan Miller, 2018, RHP, Fleetwood Area HS (PA)
6-foot-2, 205-pound primary pitcher works solely out of the stretch.  Compact delivery with limited wasted actions.  Stays directional to the plate well from an over-the-top arm slot.  Sat 84-86 with late life to a fastball that is relatively flat.  Also displayed a changeup at 72-73 and a vastly improved curveball at 73-75 with sharp, late break.

Austin Odell, 2018, RHP, Bishop Shanahan HS (PA)
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-hander sat 84-85 from a compact, high 3/4 delivery working on short rest. Also displayed a 74 mph curveball with 11/5 shape and a 75 mph changeup with good arm speed. Worked two innings with two strikeouts and induced four ground ball outs.  Long frame has room for additional weight.  Far from maximum effort delivery allows for solid command and the potential for additional velocity spikes.  Odell committed on June 19, six days after his outing in this event, to Hofstra.

Blaise Sclafani, 2018, RHP, Souderton Area HS (PA)
6-foot-5, 185-pound UMASS-Lowell commit.  Sat 82-85 from an up-tempo delivery out of a 3/4 arm slot.  Shows above average body control for a delivery that incorporates a significant leg kick and hip coil.  All work in unison to create deception.  A slider at 74 mph and a 75-76 mph changeup give Sclafani three effective pitches that will translate to the next level.  Worked three innings allowing two hits while registering five strikeouts.

Bren Taylor, 2019, SS/RHP, Eastern York HS (PA)
5-foot-11, 175-pound left-handed hitter starts from an open stance and strides to a slightly closed position cutting off his lower half at times.  Hands work well from a high-load position and a solid feel for the barrel was evident both in batting practice.  Went 3-for-7 in game play with a number of loud outs while showcasing the ability to drive the middle of the field. Registered an 85 mph bat exit velocity and ran a solid 6.88 60-yard dash.  Displayed capable defensive actions with 75 mph arm strength.  Currently profiles as a 2B/3B at the next level.  Also worked three scoreless innings on the mound sitting 76-78 with some arm-side run from a high 3/4 arm slot.  Utilized a 63 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation as his secondary offering.

Ian Tracy, 2018, OF, West Chester Henderson HS (PA)
6-foot, 185-pounder showed well in all facets of the game running a 6.72 60 yard dash, flashing an 87 mph bat exit velocity and displaying 81 mph from the outfield.  The left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing from a deep load position with a heel-raise stride.  Tends to cut-off swing short of full extension, but displayed solid feel for the barrel, especially to the pull side. Went 4-for-8 in game action, including two infield singles.  Displayed athletic actions in the outfield with good routes to the baseball.

James Vito, 2018, C/1B, West Chester Henderson HS (PA)
5-foot-11, 185-pounder showcased pop times of 2.15-2.32 on throws of 73 mph from the crouch. Received well in game action and ran a 7.60 60-yard dash.  Right-handed hitter starts from slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a heel-raise stride.  Displayed a short swing path a limited wasted actions in his swing with a bat exit velocity of 85 mph.  Went 1-for-3 in game action on day one while displaying the ability to use all parts of the field.

Nate Young, 2018, 1B/LHP, Ephrata HS (PA)
6-foot-1, 160-pound two-way prospect with athletic frame that still has room for added growth.  Left-handed hitter incorporates a short, lift-and-replace stride from a square stance to initiate his swing. Compact, line drive approach resulted in consistent barrels in batting practice and a bat exit velocity of 74 mph.  Moves well around the bag at first base and ran a 7.52 60-yard dash.  Lefty sat 80-83 on the mound, a five mph jump since we last saw him six months ago.  Works from a high 3/4 arm slot with a loose, repeatable delivery.  Curveball got better and better as his three innings wore on.  At its best it showed late 1/7 bite at 68 mph.
