East TN College Prospect Showcase: Middle Infield Analysis

The PBR East Tennessee College Prospect Showcase took place on Saturday, January 17 in Knoxville and included some impressive performances from the group of players in attendance.  We continue to feature evaluations from the event by position group.  The following is a look at the group of middle infielders who were in attendance.  This is position player analysis only.  Those middle infielders who also pitched at the event will have their pitching evaluation featured in a separate article.

Bryce Hodge, 2017, SS, R/R, Halls HS
The 6 foot 1, 188-pound prospect showed good projectability and athleticism, had an exit velocity off the tee of 88 mph, ran a 4.7 home to first base time , showed good bat speed, balanced set up with a slight leg kick, good fluid rhythm, aggressive, gap to gap type hitter with power potential. Position velocity across the infield was 76 mph, showed soft hands, fluid footwork, long exchange, natural instincts, needs to improve on getting quicker, has a strong and athletic build, player to definitely keep an eye on in 2017 class.

Andrew Jones, 2017, 2B, R/R, Maryville HS
The 5 foot 9, 130-pound prospect had an exit velocity off the tee of 78 mph, showed good speed with a 4.3 home to first base time, hits from an athletic setup with a leg kick, has average balance and bat speed, tendency to wrap his bat at times, aggressive with a pull approach, line drive type hitter. Position velocity was 79 mph across the infield, showed good athleticism, hands work, fluid footwork, good arm strength, quick exchange, some accurate throws across the infield, athletic player with good upside to his game.

Kellon Powell, 2016, 2B, R/R, Anderson Co HS
The 5 foot 10, 138-pound prospect had an 81 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 4.75 home to first base time, hits from a balanced setup, minimal stride, fair balance, average bat speed, line drive type hitter, has a tendency to drop his hands, needs more extension on his swing. Position velocity was 72 mph across the infield, showed average hands, flat footwork, needs to catch the ball out front more, showed average athleticism.

Lyndon Wilson, 2016, SS, R/R, Knoxville Central HS
The 6 foot 2, 180-pound prospect showed some projectability and good athleticism, had a 75 mph exit velocity off the tee, 4.85 hone to first base time, has a balanced setup, smooth back load, short stride, average balance and bat speed, long path, line drive type hitter, needs to be more aggressive. Position velocity across the infield was 74 mph, showed average hands, quick instincts, played through the ball well, clean exchange and fluid footwork.

Taylor Lawson, 2017, 2B, R/R, Grace Christian Academy
The 5 foot 7 , 153-pound prospect showed good projectability and athleticism, had an exit velocity time of 76 mph off the tee, ran a 4.2 home to first time, showed average bat speed, hit from an open setup with a short stride, good balance and approach, is a line drive type hitter. Position velocity across the infield was 72 mph, had smooth hands and a quick exchange, footwork was very fluid, instincts were quick and had good arm strength

Hunter Helton, 2016, 2B, R/R, Knoxville Central HS
The 6 foot 1, 140-pound prospect showed some projectability with a lanky frame, had a 65 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 5.4 home to first base time, had a balanced setup with a slight leg kick, average bat speed, fair approach, level path, fluid rhythm, line drive type hitter. Position velocity was 63 mph across the infield, had average hands, slow exchange, fluid footwork, needs to work on lateral quickness.

Wade Gargan, 2017, SS, R/R, Roane Co HS
The 5 foot 10, 150-pound prospect has an athletic build, has a balanced setup with average bat speed, level path, good approach, is a gap to gap type hitter, exit velocity off the tee was 75 mph, and ran a 4.5 home to first base time. Position velocity across the infield was 71 mph, showed quick footwork and exchange, average hands, works through the baseball well.

Joshua Dobbs, 2018, 2B, L/R, Powell HS
The 5 foot 5, 130-pound prospect shows some athleticism, had an exit velocity off the tee of 70 mph, ran a 4.7 home to first base time, has an open stance, smooth back load, short stride, good balance, average bat speed and showed a good approach at the plate. Position velocity time was 66 mph across the infield, showed average hands, needs to catch the ball out front more, has a clean exchange with natural instincts.

Bradley Clark, 2016, SS, R/R, Knoxville Central HS
The 6 foot , 180-pound prospect showed good projectability and average athleticism,  had a 84 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 4.5 home to first base time, had a good balanced setup, short stride, shows some bat speed. Position velocity across the infield was 77 mph, showed soft hands and worked around the ball well, played through the ball well and has natural instincts for the shortstop position.

Garrett Breeden, 2018, 2B, L/R, Christian Academy Knoxville
The 5 foot 8, 150-pound prospect showed some athleticism, had an exit velocity off the tee of 66 mph, ran a home to first base time of 4.64, hits from an open stance, smooth back load with a short stride, has good balance and fluid rhythm, good approach with average bat speed for age. Position Velocity across the infield was 66 mph , has short arm action, soft hands, fluid footwork, needs to get quicker on his exchange, shows natural defensive instincts.

Chase Elkins, 2B, 2018, R/R, Anderson Co HS
The 5 foot 9 , 160-pound prospect showed average athleticism, showed good bat speed for age with an exit velocity off the tee of 81 mph, ran a 4.8 home to first base time, showed good bat speed through the zone, short stride, fair balance , arm bar load, has a long swing path. Position Velocity across the infield was 70 mph, showed a stiff fielding position, average hands, room to improve footwork, clean exchange, should see quickness improve as he continues to mature.
