Draft League Spotlight: Matthew Ellis
May 7, 2021
Player: Matthew Ellis
Position: C
School: Walters State CC
A former Tennessee recruit who’s committed to play for the Hoosiers in 2022, Ellis looks the part of a future pro catcher on both sides of the ball. He impacts the ball consistently from the left side, showing a natural feel for the barrel as well as plenty of power and an approach that makes it all work. He recorded a max exit velocity of 108 mph at Walters’ Scout Day (Oct. 2020) and has put up big numbers so far in ‘21, slashing .351/.491/.714 with 16 homers and more walks than strikeouts through 55 games. Defensively, Ellis will post pop times in the 1.91-1.95-second range behind the plate. He’s a good athlete (7.26-sec. 60) with a clean arm stroke that produces 85 mph darts.
