Draft League Spotlight: Luis Guerrero

Position: RHP

School: Chipola

One of the top strikeout artists in the NJCAA ranks this season, Guerrero has the stuff to support his bat-missing ways. The 6-foot, 215-pound right-hander’s fastball has sat 93-96 mph this spring and he’s consistently held that velocity deep into starts, riding the pitch up in the zone to generate whiffs. His 78-81 mph curveball features sharp bite when it’s on, and Guerrero also can mix in a slider in the mid-80s to offer a different look. Guerrero’s low-80s splitter might be his best secondary pitch -- an above-average, swing-and-miss offering at 82-84 mph that he throws with late vertical drop. Guerrero is still learning how to harness his athleticism on the mound and can lose his command as a result, but he also uses that athleticism to disrupt hitters’ timing by altering the timing in his delivery. Altogether, Guerrero has racked up 95 strikeouts (tied for the seventh-best mark in NJCAA) through 58 innings in 2021 for a 14.74 K/9 (ninth in NJCAA).
