DiBiase Ready For First Season At Cheverus
PORTLAND, Me. - While coaches across the country have uncertainties about their team this year after missing out on the 2020 season due to covid, Tony DiBiase has good reason for not knowing what he has with this year’s squad at Cheverus.
After all, DiBiase is a first-year head coach at Cheverus after a recent stint as assistant coach at Falmouth.
What is known is that there are four returning players to build around at the private prep school that lost to eventual state champion Scarborough 4-0 in the Class A South quarterfinals in 2019.
“We have solid pitching and hope to improve our defense and hitting as players get more experienced,” explained DiBiase, who takes over for Mac McKew, who coached at Cheverus 11 years, retiring with a record of 130-69 including a 2011 state championship.
Cheverus, which was 10-8 in McKew’s final season at the helm, has a trio of seniors back to lead the 2021 squad in Sam Clark, Nick Giancotti and Jackson Header. Junior Kevin Connolly rounds out the returnees for DiBiase
Clark is the 127th-rated 2021 right-handed pitcher in New England and committed to UConn while Giancotti is a southpaw hurler who also plays in the outfield. Header pitches and plays outfield as well, while Connolly is back after seeing action as a freshman at catcher.
“We’ve had a wonderful spring,” noted DiBiase, who was head coach at South Portland for 14 years and Portland for four prior to his time at Falmouth. “It’s a feeling-out process, nothing is set in stone. We’re doing a lot of experimenting. The kids need to find their way through the varsity wars.
“Pitching should be our strength and will keep us in a lot of games. We want to stay healthy and peak at the end. By the end of the year, we think we can make some noise in the tournament.”
