Here is a look at some scores and highlights from the State Tournament games around the Murfreesboro area on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.
DIVISION I – A
Goodpasture 5, Peabody 1
Zach Wallace earned the complete-game victory on the mound for the Cougars, allowing 6 hits and 1 run while striking out 5. Joel Littlepage went 3-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI to lead the offense. David Wilson, Cole Carter, and Seth Pentecost all recorded 2 hits.
Summertown 3, North Greene 0
Bailey Burleson out-dueled North Greene's Zane Potter on Tuesday night, tossing a 2-hit shutout to give the Eagles a victory in the first round. Burleson struck out 8 and Potter didn't allow any earned runs. Koltar Houser, Bradley Huckaba, and Trey Trotter scored the only runs of the game and combined for 3 of the Eagles' 4 hits on the night.
Loretto 4, Greenback 0
Ryan Weathers put together yet another remarkable performance on both sides of the baseball to lead the Mustangs to an opening-round win. Weathers dealt a complete-game 1-hitter with 16 strikeouts, while also finishing 2-4 with a home run. Jacob Hallmark and Blade Tidwell both had 2 hits, as well.
Huntingdon 4, Gordonsville 0
The Mustangs of Huntingdon got a strong performance from Zach Dodson on Tuesday night, as he was able to shut out the Gordonsville offense while only allowing 2 hits and striking out 5. Hunter Ensley went 2-3, Josh Coleman drove in 2 runs, and Kade Pearson scored twice to power the offense.
DIVISION I – AA
Covington 8, CPA 1
Christian Delashmit dealt all 7 innings, striking out 4 and allowing only 1 run on 3 hits to lead the Chargers over CPA. Brock Lomax and Ty Warmath both went 2-3, Cole Howard drove in 2 runs, and Ethan Whitley hit a 3-run home run in the top of the 7th to create some separation on the scoreboard.
Murfreesboro Central 1, Pigeon Forge 0
Patrick Norman stepped up in a big way on Tuesday night, leading the Tigers to an opening round victory by tossing a complete-game 1-hitter with 7 strikeouts to earn the W on the mound. Hayden Locum had a hit, but Parker Phillips tallied the only run of the game by hitting a solo home run in the top of the 7th inning.
CAK 10, Signal Mountain 2
The middle of the Warriors' lineup came out hot on Tuesday evening, as Hudson Chastain, Zane Keener, Alex Osborne, and Garrett Breeden combined to go 7-13 with 6 runs and 7 RBIs in the victory. Spencer Strider earned the W by striking out 6 over the first 4 innings and Lucas Sykes finished it off over the final 3.
Spring Hill 5, Lexington 2
Gage Gillian struck out 10 in his 6.1 innings of work, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs in the win. Brycen Thomas earned the save by getting the final 2 outs and went 1-2 with a walk, a run, and an RBI at the plate. Hunter Whitwell went 2-4 with 2 runs and an RBI, while Austin Dunston finished 2-4 with a run.
DIVISION I – AAA
Brentwood 4, Munford 0
Caleb Pearson and Connor Smith combined to shut out the Cougars of Munford by striking out 9 and allowing only 6 hits in the game. Carson Shacklett finished 2-4 with 2 runs and an RBI, while Kaden Dreier, Luke Reidy, and Tyler Shelton drove in the others.
Blackman 11, Dobyns-Bennett 3
The Blaze bats came out hot, posting 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning and making an early statement on Tuesday night. Michael Chuba went off, finishing 3-3 with a run and 5 RBis to power the offense, while DJ Wright went 2-3 with 3 runs and an RBI. Jacob Jones threw 5 innings of 3-hit baseball to earn the W on the mound.
Jefferson County 2, Beech 1
Matt Bradley led the Patriots on both sides of the baseball, guiding them to an opening-round victory over the Beech Buccaneers. Bradley tossed 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 7 hits and 4 strikeouts, while also driving in Jefferson County's only 2 runs of the game. Tyler Shaver earned the save and Jonathan Royster finished 2-3.
Stewarts Creek 10, Houston 0
The Red Hawks used a complete team effort to overpower Houston in their first round matchup, as 6 different players recorded at least 1 hit, 1 run, and 1 RBI on the night. Maddox Vondohlen earned the W on the mound, tossing all 5 innings and allowing only 2 hits while striking out 5. Tre Bailliez went 2-3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and 1 RBI to lead the offense.
DIVISION II – A
USJ 2, Harding Academy 1
Although the Bruins were only able to muster 2 hits against Harding Academy's Nathan Ruble, they found a way to scratch out a run in the 2nd and a run in the 5th to earn the opening-round victory on Tuesday night. Charlie Darnall (4.1 ip) and Cole Sammons (2.2 ip) combined to strike out 7 Lions and allow only 1 run.
ECS 7, St. George's 3
Seven Eagles tallied 2 hits in Tuesday's opening round win over St. George's, highlighted by Nathan McMeans' 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Josh Rooker finished 2-4 with a double and an RBI and Houston Harding earned the W on the mound. Harding didn't allow an earned run through 5 innings and Riley Watkins closed out the final 2 innings.
DIVISION II – AA
Brentwood Academy 6, Pope John Paul II 0
Bryce Jarvis dealt a complete-game shutout to take down the Knights, striking out 9 and allowing only 5 hits through his 7 innings of work. Jarvis also finished 2-3 with 2 runs scored at the plate. Alex Reynolds went 2-3 with 2 runs and an RBI while Conner Woodlee drove in 2. Jake Rucker and Ben Brooks had 4 of the Knights' 5 hits.
McCallie 1, Briarcrest 0
In possibly the best pitching matchup we will see throughout the entire tournament, Corbin Brooksbank out-dueled Briarcrest's Connor Shamblin for a 1-0 McCallie victory. Brooksbank struck out 11 and allowed only 4 hits in his 7 innings of work and Cameron Costo drove in the only run of the game on a walk-off sac fly in the bottom of the 7th to score Dane Beard.
