Cyr, Hansen and Jenista Stand Out at Top 100

This past Saturday Prep Baseball Report had the opportunity to attend the KC Barnstormers Top 100 Showcase at Missouri Western University in St. Joseph Missouri.

Today we take a look at three pitching prospects from Kansas high schools that stood out:

Ryan Cyr, RHP, Blue Valley HS, Class of 2015
The strong-framed 6-foot-2, 190-pound Cyr is widely regarded as one of the top class of 2015 pitchers in the area and is front and center on the radar screen of nearby major college baseball programs.  He throws from a high ¾ slot with clean arm action and has excellent body control throughout his delivery – definitely a pitcher very capable of developing high-level command down the road.  He worked in the 82-86 mph range with his fastball, displaying late downward sinking action.  He also showed command of an upper 60’s knuckle curve ball and mid-70’s sinking change up.  One thing to keep in mind about Cyr is he also plays football, helping Blue Valley HS capture the state championship just weeks ago so he’s still transitioning from football to baseball mode, I would anticipate mid-80’s turning into upper 80’s once he loosens up this spring.  Cyr plays for the Mac N Seitz organization out of Kansas City, Missouri in the summer.  To Cyr's pitching video from Saturday click here.

Austin Hansen, RHP/SS, Olathe Northwest HS, Class of 2015
It’s becoming apparent that Olathe Northwest’s calling card is the production of talented left-hand hitting shortstops – with the likes of Nate Tenbrink (former K-State player and current Seattle Mariners AAA product), Austin Fisher (2013 First-Team All-Big 12 Conference shortstop for K-State) and now Hansen.  During the hitting and infield portion of the workouts, the 6-foot, 165-pound Hansen performed well showing a solid skill set.  However, his talents on the mound stood out, in particular the presence of a real breaking ball.  His delivery is athletic, explosive and he has quick, clean arm action.  He works uphill but his quick arm allows him to get out front with ease.  Hansen hides the ball well which no doubt causes problems for hitters.  His fastball ranged from 81-83 mph, most with late sink.  His breaking ball registered in the low 70’s with a late, hard left turn and he has command of it – it’s a lot more than just a nice little breaking ball.  With his quick arm, athleticism and far from filled out frame, it doesn’t take much imagination to envision the 185-pound version of Hansen dialing an upper 80’s fastball with a game-altering breaking ball winning (or saving) a lot of games at the next level.  Hansen plays for the KC Barnstormers organization in the summer and fall seasons.  Footage of Hansen's pitching performance can be seen here.

Greyson Jenista, RHP/1B, DeSoto HS, Class of 2015
Jenista, a Wichita State commit and KC Barnstormers product, certainly has the MLB body part of the equation down standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 215 pounds.  He showed excellent balance throughout his delivery allowing his powerful arm to deliver mid-to-upper 80’s strikes with, at times, late life.  Jenista also flashed a 74-77 breaking ball and 76-79 change-up.  He is also a left-hand hitting 1B/IF who showed good hands and, of course, a strong accurate arm working out at both both first base base and shortstop.  His performance during batting practice was a lot like his pitching – controlled aggression.  His talents on the mound narrowly edge out his abilities as a position player – but I wouldn’t rule out him being a major contributor doing both at the next level.  He also ran a 7.15 60-yard dash, impressive indeed for such an imposing figure.  To see video footage of Jenista pitching click here.
