Countryman carries DI Graham; DI Christiano holds off late DI Bunting rally

DI Graham 6 Di Wiktorski 2
Maxx Countryman (Avon) pulled double duty as DI Graham grabbed an early lead and never trailed in Upstate Baseball League action at Towers Field on the campus of the University of Rochester, Monday night. Countryman surrendered two runs on five hits over five innings for the win. Setting up batters with his fastball early in the count and letting his breaking pitch do the work late, the right-hander struck out six and walked one. He retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced and allowed two balls out the infield over his last three innings of work. At the plate, Countryman connected on a three-run home run in the first as DI Graham rallied with two outs. Alex Vogt (Webster Schroeder) reached on a two-out error to keep the inning alive. Zeke Humphrey (Charles Finney) walked, and Countryman delivered with a shot to right center to put a crooked number on the scoreboard. Ryan Hill (Webster Thomas) led the third with a walk, and Shane Harisis (Eastridge) followed with a single as DI Graham scored two runs in the frame for the final margin. CJ Wiest (Brockport) fanned one and allowed two hits over two shutout innings in relief. Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua) plated Nick Vogt (Webster Schroeder) with a two-out RBI single in the third. Ray Specht (Rush-Henrietta) sparked a two-run DI Wiktorski second with a leadoff double. Ben Cowles (Newark) worked a base on balls. One out later, Tyler Smith (Fairport) singled, and Anthony Roides (Fairport) went opposite with a two-run single cutting the deficit to one at 3-2. It was as close as DI Wiktorski would get. Specht finished 2-for-3 on the day. John Faynor (Lima Christian) was also 2-for-3. Smith worked a perfect seventh. The right-hander struck out one and threw 10 pitches – seven for strikes.

DI Christiano 8 DI Bunting 6
Jake LaPlant (Williamson) allowed one run on two hits over four innings to pick up the win. The right-hander struck out four, walked one, retired the first five he faced and did not allow a hit until giving up a two-out RBI single in the third. Tommy Baxter (Webster Schroeder) led the game with a single, and DI Christiano jumped to 2-0 lead before LaPlant took the mound. Baxter stole second, moved to third on a Sam Velletri (Brockport) base hit and scored on a wild pitch. Tyler Holmes (Fairport) put runners on the corners with an infield hit, and Velletri came home on a Zach Ochs (Rush-Henrietta) RBI ground out. DI Christiano doubled its advantage in the second.  Jake Loewke (Churchville-Chili), Nate Sanderson (Rush-Henrietta) and Kevin Canton (Greece Odyssey) combined for three straight one-out singles. Loewke scored on an error, and Steven Kemp (Eastridge) brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. DI Christiano pushed the advantage to six when Holmes and Ochs drilled back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth for a 7-1 lead. But DI Bunting rallied. Luke Frontale (CBA-Syracuse) capped a five-run DI Bunting sixth with a bases-clearing double.  Reece Correa (School of the Arts) sparked the surge when he plated Lucas DeVito (Newark) with a triple to straight center. Racer Lynch (Geneva), Alfredo Aponte (School of the Arts) and Joey Kench (Rush-Henrietta) worked consecutive walks before Frontale pulled DI Bunting within one at 7-6. Frontale was 2-for-3 with a two-out triple in the fourth. Aponte got DI Bunting on the board with a two-out single in the third. DI Christiano’s Austin Avanzato (Midlakes) went 2-for-3 on the night and scored an insurance run in the seventh. Avanzato led the frame with an infield base hit, moved to second on Loewke sacrifice bunt and scored on a Sanderson triple. Ochs was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Holmes also had two hits in two trips to the plate. Holmes traded his spot behind the plate and toed the rubber for an inning and two-thirds and picked up the save. The DI Christiano catcher struck out one and walked one
