Connecticut Spotlight Game: Notre Dame West Haven vs Masuk
Monroe, CT -- In a CIAC Class L second round matchup at Masuk High School, No. 18 seed Notre Dame West Haven defeated No. 2 seed Masuk 3-0.
This was a pitcher’s duel throughout, but Notre Dame West Haven came away on top behind a masterful pitching performance from Michael Sansone (2018).
The Green Knights of Notre Dame West Haven struck first in the top of the 1st, as they scored a run on an RBI single by Mike Dziczkowski (2017). Mike Torniero (2018) scored the run after he and Charles Rhodes (2018) drew back to back walks.
The Green Knights scored their second run in the top of the 3rd inning on a suicide squeeze from John Milone (2019) after Bradley Zsampar (2017) and Mike Torniero (2018) hit back to back singles to start the inning.
Notre Dame picked up an insurance run in the top of the 7th as Akshay Reddy (2018) drew a walk and ended up scoring on a throwing error.
Michael Sansone (2018) of Notre Dame was dominant in this game as he did not allow a baserunner until there was one out in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Top Performers
- Mike Sansone, LHP, 2018 - Pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and no walks. He struck out 10 batters in the game and looked dominant for most of the afternoon. Pounds the zone and uses his off speed stuff to keep hitters off balance.
- Mike Torniero, OF, 2018 - Went 1-3 in this game with a walk and a run scored. Had a good day in CF showing off some good range. Very good athlete who runs well.
- Mike Marella, LHP, 2019 - Pitched 6 innings, allowed 4 hits, 4 walks, 2 runs, and struck out 2. Didn’t have his best stuff in this game but fought through it and ended up pitching pretty well. Very mature pitcher for his age.
- Vinny Sampieri, 2B, 2018 - Went 1-2 in this game. Was the only player on Masuk to reach base. Had a very good day in the field. Charges the ball well and turned a good looking double play.
