Conant 8, Wheaton Warrenville South 2

WHEATON, IL – In the first round of the Class 4A playoffs, on Monday afternoon, Conant defeated Wheaton Warrenville South by the score of 8-2.

The game featured plenty of offense and base runners from both sides. Both teams had 12 hits apiece and there was only one three-up, three-down half inning.

Conant’s offense pounded out 12 hits and got contributions up and down the lineup. Every starter but one had a hit and four had multiple hits for the Cougars.

The Cougars scored multiple runs in three innings. They scored two in the second inning, three in the fourth and two more in the seventh to pull away for good. Conant took a 2-1 lead after the second inning thanks to a one out, two-run single by Tim Fauth. The ball, not hit overly hard, got past the first baseman and scored Sam Ryan and Ian Taylor, a Saginaw Valley State commit. Ryan had led off the frame with a single and Taylor walked.

Jack Reiger delivered the big blow in the three-run fourth inning for the Cougars. After the first two batters of the inning reached, Reiger lined a two-run double to the left-center field wall. Reiger would later score on a groundout by Logan Smith.

Another two-run double, this time by Dave Sapyta, led to the final two runs for Conant in the top of the seventh.

Junior, right-hander Matt Majer battled throughout and picked up the win on the mound for Conant. Majer went 5.2 innings, scattered 10 hits, two runs, struck out four and walked three.

Wheaton Warrenville South seemed to have runners on base throughout the contest but could not break through with a big hit late in the game. Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers got three singles from Matt Scherrman, Joe Adamek and Ryan Simak to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate with two outs. Conant decided to go to the bullpen and brought in Mason Sykes. Sykes induced a pop up for the final out in the sixth and then struck out two batters in a scoreless seventh to record the save and preserve the win for Conant.

Adamek went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and Brad Novak added three hits and two RBI to pace the Wheaton Warrenville South offense.

Tyler Hedman, Ryan, Sapyta and Fauth each had two hits to lead the way for Conant.

Conant moves on the Class 4A regional and will face St. Charles East on Wednesday.
