Over the next couple of weeks we are going to recap some of the best statistics we have on record since our launch in April of 2014. We have covered the top 60 times in the 2017 and 2018 classes, and the 2016 Class We continue our look back with the best OF velocities in the 2017 and 2018 classes.
Eric Cox, OF, Cherokee Trail, 2017
OF Velo: 88
Comittment: Uncommitted
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 200 pounds. Bats and throws right. Cox is a strong muscular outfielder. At the plate he utilizes an open stance with a toe tap that generates a bat whip good for 88 mph exit velo off the tee. Could generate more bat speed if he used legs more. Ball jumps off bat. Had a strong arm from the outfield at 88 mph. Cox showed good base running instincts plus speed on the bases. Cox ran a 7.09 60 time. We like his potential and athletic ability. When he learns to use lower half more in his swing he could show some good power potential.
James Notary, RHP/OF, Broomfield, 2017
OF Velo: 88
Commitment: Texas Christian
Scouting Report: 6-foot-2, 180 pounds. Bats and throws right. Notary was the most dominating pitcher at the event. Was voted best 2017 prospect at the event. Notary has good mechanics with a square, in-line over the top delivery that brings a 85-86 mph fastball to the plate. That was up from 82 mph last January. Good led drive towards home that produces good down angle and extension. Curveball was 12-6 shape with good tight spin at 71 mph. Change had some fade at 72. We did notice at times will slow down arm motion to throw both of those pitches. Projects to be a 90 mph thrower, and high prospect to watch. In the OF showed fluid mechanics. Threw 88 mph from right field to 3B which was tied for the highest OF velo at the event.
Parker Hunter, OF/RHP, Eaglecrest, 2017
OF Velo: 87
Commitment: Uncommitted
Scouting Report: 6-foot, 150 pounds. Bats and throws right. Has a wide, open stance. Athletic. Level swing through the zone. Gets hands to inside pitch. Line drive gap hitter. Has nice pop in his bat. Hips torque on contact. Generates 78 mph exit velocity off tee. In the outfield had the strongest arm at 87 mph. Ran a 7.53 60. On the mound showed a good fastball that sat at 81-82 mph with some sink. Could generate more velocity but stops short a little on follow throw. Long loose arm action from high 3/4 arm angle. In the OF had solid mechanics and got behind ball fine. Catches ball with one hand. Had a strong arm from the OF at 87 mph.
Tanner O'Tremba: OF/RHP, Cherry Creek, 2018
60 Time: 6.87
Committed: Uncommitted
Scouting Report: 6-foot, 210 pounds. Bats and throws right. O'tremba is a very explosive player. Looks like a full back and plays the game extremely hard. O'tremba uses a slightly open stance and has an explosive swing. He can keeps his hands back, and also turn on a fastball. Has a big load, and uses leg kick to start a swing that is explosive on contact that generated an impressive 97 mph exit velocity off a tee. Has gap to gap power. In the outfield has a lot of speed for his size, and proved it with a 6.87 60 time. Strong arm at 84 mph. On the mound was consistently 85-86 mph with a high of 88, and he just chose to blow his fastball by the hitters this weekend. In games in the spring we have seen curve ball with 11/5 shape at 67 mph. Hides the ball well, and is square to the plate then falls off towards first base side after landing with strong leg drive. Very high player to follow.
Toby Scoles, OF/LHP, Pine Creek
OF Velo: 84
Commitment: Uncommitted
Scouting Report: Athletic build, 5-foot-11, 165-pound outfielder/left-handed pitcher. Offensively hits from a balanced, athletic stance with a short stride leg kick. Hands are even with shoulder and back elbow setup. Bat is wrapped slightly behind head with short load. Level swing with good extension. Line drive type hitter, occasionally lifts the baseball, 79 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively plays through the baseball, shows athleticism. Ran a home to first in 4.22 seconds. Arm played well from the outfield, short over the top slot, some accuracy, showed carry at 84 mph. On the mound fastball sits 79-80 mph, and hit one 82 mph. Has clean set up and at delivery tilts to a high ¾ arm slot, simple, tall-and-fall repeatable delivery, toe down at balance point, 66-67 mph breaking ball showed gradual break, 73-74 mph changeup displayed cutting action.
