Class of 2016 Top OF Velos

Over the next couple of weeks we are going to recap some of the best statistics we have on record since our launch in April of 2014. We have covered the top 60 times in the 2017 and 2018 classes, and the 2016 Class  We covered top OF Velos for the 2017 and 2018 classes and continue with the 2016 class.

Tanner Johnson, OF/RHP, Chatfield
OF Velo: 90
Commitment: Garden City CC
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 155-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder.  Last time we saw Tanner he threw 85 mph at our Preseason All-State Event. Today he was 90 mph from right field. Throws were somewhat accurate but shows a very strong arm from right. At the plate he was consistent gap to gap with an 84 mph exit velocity off a pitcher. On the mound fastball was increased from 81 to 84 mph with long/loose arm action, high ¾ arm slotwith good command of both sides of the plate.  Drops arm slot to more 3/4 on off speed pitches. Curveball was 72-73 mph with 10/6 gradual break.

Jordan Luthi, 2016, Legacy 
OF Velo: 87 MPH

Scouting Report: 6-foot-0, 165-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder, At the plate, uses athletic stance with good leg drive, level bat path to extension, power to pull gap, quick bat speed with 86 MPH exit velocity, 4.44 home to first. Defensively, 87 MPH positional velocity, high ¾ release, mostly accurate throws with life, clean exchange, good routes to ball, fluid footwork.  Ran a 7.10 60.

Andrew Coverly, OF, Grandview 
OF Velo: 86 MPH
Commitment:  Uncommitted
Scouting Report: 6-foot-1, 187-pound, OF/RHP impressed with his overall athleticism at the Unsigned Senior Games.  At the plate he hits from a wide balanced stance.  An upward swing plane produced balls with good carry during BP.  Good leg drive through the zone produced an exit velocity of 92 MPH off the pitch.  In the Outfield he moved well on balls left and right and displayed a strong 86 MPH accurate arm.  On the mound he drops down and throws from a ¾ to side arm angle.  A smooth delivery and good arm speed on all pitches produced an 80-83 MPH fastball and 73-75 curve that moved sharp away from the right handed hitters.

Kadin Breeze, OF/RHP, Rocky Mountain 
OF Velo: 85 MPH
Commitment:  Uncommitted 
Scouting Report: 6-foot-1, 165 pound, switch hitting OF/RHP. Breeze showed a strong arm from the outfield throwing 85 mph. with good carry. Attacks the ball aggressively in outfield and plays through the ball well. At the plate stands tall and uses a balanced stance with slight leg kick from both sides. Has a good approach with fast bat speed. Lower half appears better from the left side then the right. Has nice rhythm with good extension with  line drive power that produces 81 mph exit velocity from both sides. Ran a 7.33 60 time. On the mound has a high 3/4 arm slot and simple delivery with an athletic finish. Fastball sat at 79 to 80 mph. Good mechanics bring him to the strike zone consistently. Curve ball had 10/4 tilt with late break. Change up was 73-74 mph and was thrown as same arm speed as fastball.

Quin Cotton, OF, Regis Jesuit 
OF Velo: 84 MPH
Commitment:  Grand Canyon University
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 175 pounds. Bats and throws right. Impressive looking athlete. At the plate has no wasted movement from a balanced athletic stance. Load is smooth and stride is short. Bat speed and lower half are explosive. Has line drive gap to gap power that produced the 2nd fastest exit velocity at the tryout at 91 mph. Shows power potential. In the outfield displays confidence with good actions. Throws from a high 3/4 arm slot at 84 mph with good carry. Ran a 6.80 60 time. Was the most athletic looking player at the tryout. High 2016 player to follow in our state.

Zach Sundine, LHP/OF, Grandview 
OF Velo: 84 MPH
Commitment:  Central Arizona
Scouting Report: A 5-foot-10, 145-pound, two way player that gets the most out of his frame.  At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with very little movement to start.  He opens his front side up and uses good leg drive to produce an exit velocity of 87 MPH off the pitch.  He has a slight upward swing plane and his ball carries well to the gaps.  In the field he moves well in all directions.  He gets behind the baseball and had an 84 MPH arm velocity from right field.  On the mound he is simple and in line to the plate.  A high ¾ arm slot produced a fastball that was 80-82 MPH at the USG.  He also displayed a 64-67 MPH  curve that dove hard in on right-handed hitters.  He ran a 7.35 60.
