Class Of 2023 Showcase: Statistical Analysis
October 15, 2021
On Sunday, October 10, the PBR Illinois staff returned to The MAX Sports Complex to host the Class of 2023 Showcase. This annual event serves as an opportunity for prospects in the state’s current junior class to display their talents in front of our scouting staff prior to the start of the off-season. There were more than 60+ prospects that made the trip to The MAX on Sunday and participated in a pro-style workout in front of our evaluators.
Today, our scouting staff will begin to roll out all our prototypical post-event content pieces, starting with this statistical analysis. Below we’ll highlight players that put up numbers from a traditional standpoint, such as leaders in the 60-yard dash, max throwing velocities, and other data gathered from the day.
We’ll also roll out more analysis as the week rolls on, like a takeaways piece from the day and deeper data dives with the statistics collected from our technological partners at TrackMan and Blast Motion.
For now, take a look at which players put out noteworthy statistical outputs.
STAT STORY
+ CIF Graham Mastros (New Trier, 2023) put up some noteworthy numbers across the board, leading or finishing towards the top of multiple different statistical categories throughout his workout. A 6-foot-2, 225-pound athlete, Mastros’ 6.73 in the 60-yard dash was the day’s third-fastest time, which is an especially impressive feat given his size. He recorded a 90-percent hard hit rate in batting practice, posting an event best 99 mph max exit velocity. Mastros' best throw across the infield peaked at 87 mph to his target, which finished a couple of ticks behind the event leader.
+ RHP/INF Josh Katz (Lane Tech, 2023) was a two-way standout that also put up impressive statistical outputs throughout the day. A strong 5-foot-11, 175-pound athlete, Katz kicked his day off with a 6.97 in the 60-yard dash, which was amongst the day’s best times. Katz flashed advanced arm strength and carry across the diamond, firing two 89 mph bullets across the infield during his defensive workout. Katz later hopped on the mound and finished tied for the event lead in max fastball velocity, registering an 87 mph best in his ‘pen, per TrackMan.
+ A trio of outfielders each strung together impressive all-around statistical performances on Sunday. OF Gianni Royer (Lake Forest, 2023) ran the fastest 60-yard dash of the entire event, clocking a 6.69 on our lasers. His athleticism translated to the outfield, where the 5-foot-9, 162-pound Royer pumped an 85 mph max toss to home. OF Luke Stulga (St. Laurence) also impressed, running a 6.72 in the 60 and he finished one tick ahead of Royer from the outfield, touching 86 mph. Finally, OF Amarion Paxton (Clifton Central) ran a 7.04 in the 60, which is an impressive number given his strong and physically advanced 6-foot-3, 230-pound frame. Paxton led all outfielders in throwing velocity, reaching back for 87 mph on his fourth throw to home.
+ LHP Tate Roley (Morton) and RHP Joseph Martin (Newark) both ran their fastballs up to 87 mph during their respective bullpens, pacing the group of 20+ arms in attendance. Roley is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound southpaw with plenty of projection left in his levers, while Newark’s fastball posted well above-average TrackMan traits and featured an analytically friendly all-around profile.
