As we find ourselves in the thick of the summer circuit, with events going on all around the state and country, it’s time to update our class of 2017 rankings.
It’s been a busy three-plus months since the last Class of 2017 rankings update. The winter, spring, and early summer months, both on the state and national levels, have shed more light on this talented and deep 2017 class. There has been plenty of shakeup throughout the list, which has now been expanded to 90 players.
After an incredibly impressive performance at the Tournament of Stars, RHP Blayne Enlow (St. Amant HS) takes over the No. 1 overall ranking. The 6-foot-4 lean, athletic right-hander sat 90-93 mph, giving up 0 runs in 6 innings of work against some of the best competition amateur baseball has to offer, on its biggest stage. The Louisiana State recruit exploded on the scene at last year’s Underclass Trials, and has steadily rose on the national radar ever since.
OF Jacob Pearson (West Monroe HS) climbs to No. 2. The most explosive player in Louisiana’s 2017 class, Pearson will now join Enlow and Cabrera in Louisiana State’s stellar 2017 recruiting class after de-committing from Mississippi State.
OF/LHP Daniel Cabrera (John Curtis HS) doesn’t fall far, checking in at the No. 3 slot. The Louisiana State recruit is argueably one of the most polished 2017 players in the country. A left-handed hitter, he continues to show a compact swing with bat speed, rhythm, and advanced hand-eye coordination.
Also holding firm in the top 10 are a pair of Teurlings Catholic teammates – INF Hayden Cantrelle (Louisiana-Lafayette recruit) and OF Nick Webre (Louisiana State recruit). Cantrelle is a switch-hitting shortstop that put on a display at the East Coast Pro workout in Jackson, MS a few weeks back, posting an impressive 6.5 60-yard dash. An extremely polished left-handed hitter, Webre caught fire in the playoffs, including smashing a towering game-winning home run in the bottom of the 6th inning of their semi-final matchup, helping lead Teurlings Catholic to an eventual state championship victory.
Rounding out the Top Ten are a pair of Louisiana State recruits: RHP Ma’Khail Hilliard (Central(BR) HS) and RHP/INF Miguel Reyes (Lafayette HS). Toolsy Tulane recruit, Stephen Sepcich (Jesuit HS) maintains his top ten status, and Southeastern Louisiana recruit, Preston Faulkner (Live Oak HS) cracks the top ten after an impressive spring, and early summer, consistently making loud, hard contact.
The lone uncommitted player in the top ten is pitchability LHP Adam Goree (Barbe HS). Although he may lack in explosive stuff, Goree is a winner, evident by winning 3 consecutive state championships for Glenn Cecchini’s Barbe Bucs. Battle tested, and a proven winner expect Goree to have an impact wherever he lands in the coming months.
