LAGRANGE PARK, IL- A strong contingent of pro scouts came out to see the Charlie Donovan show Monday afternoon and did not leave disappointed. Westmont went on to knock off previously undefeated No. 10 Nazareth by a score of 7-5.
Donovan got the Sentinels started early reaching base on an error to lead off the game, stole second and was driven in on a single by his brother Joe Donovan. Andrew Rosol lead off the top of the 2nd with a single, and after a two out walk to 9th place hitter Anthony Alessi, Donovan stepped to the plate. He took the letter high offering out to right field for a 3-Run homer giving Westmont a 4-0 lead.
Westmont starter Kevin Melvin worked 5 innings keeping the Nazareth hitters off balance scattering 4 hits, allowing one unearned run while striking out four, earning the win.
With a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 6th, Westmont turned the ball over to none other than Charlie Donovan to close out the game. After a groundout and a strikeout, Carson Bartels got the rally started with a triple to right field. After a hit by pitch and a stolen base Nazareth had runners at 2nd and 3rd with Matthew Wilson at the plate. Wilson hit a single up the middle plating both runners and cutting the Westmont Lead to 4-3. Donovan induced a fly out to right field to end the threat.
In the top of the 7th Westmont added 3 insurance runs on back-to-back singles by Anthony Powers and Jackson Fischer giving them a 7-3 lead.
Facing a 4-run deficit, the Roadrunners again started a rally off Donovan in the bottom of the 7th. Leadoff man Christian Ponce got things started by working a walk, after a single by Matthew Flach Donovan got an infield popup before allowing another walk to load the bases. Donovan got Kyle Kane to ground into a fielder’s choice, scoring Ponce. With runners at the corners and 2 outs Carson Bartels doubled scoring Flach cutting the lead to 7-5. With the tying run in scoring position and 2 outs Donovan buckled down striking out Joey Muscolino with an 88 mph fastball to seal the win for Westmont.
