Central Coast Open: Outfielders Analysis

The Central Coast Open Showcase took place at Cabrillo College in Aptos (CA) and was open to players from 2019-2022 classes. The event featured 50+ players, some of whom are highly ranked and rising, as well as some of the top uncommitted players in Northern California. The participants were put through a pro-style workout that saw them run the 60 yard dash, exit velocity hitting station, on-field BP, and a defensive workout before the pitchers threw their bullpens to close out the event.
As part of our coverage of the event we will continue to break down all the data, roll out stats, content, reports, and videos from the event. Today we feature the outfielders.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, 5-foot-7, 150-pounds, plays much bigger than listed size, athletically proportioned with strength throughout yet maintains good athleticism in all he did. One of better all-around uncommitted seniors in this region. One of the fastest runners at the event with a 7.01 60 yd dash on a slower surface. Offensively he flashed a top of the order bat with a slightly open setup that utilizes a toe lift to be on time with the pitcher. His even hands show a small rock back while loading and flashing quick bat speed that produced line-drives to the middle of the field while showing gap power with balls carrying due to back-spin. From the outfield he showed a quick and compact arm (78 MPH) that utilized his body well. Throws regularly produced carry while being online to the bases.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, 5-foot-11, 155-pounds. Lean lithe body, still a ways from physical maturity that will enhance what are presently quality tools and talents. Very quick 60 yd time that was one of the fastest during the event at 7.05. Athleticism carried to swing where he keeps open stance with even hands and a high back elbow. Swing starts with a high front knee tuck allowing him to create leverage and swing with intent (86 MPH exit velo) through the ball showing quick bat and the ability to drive the pull side gap. From the OF he showed a strong, quick arm that had throws with life and carry to the bags (78 MPH). Was regularly online and really utilized his body by staying behind the ball and letting the compact arm work.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-8, 130-pounds, lean athletic build on a talented young player who looks to be a 2022 to follow. One of the fastest runners at the event with 7.06 60 yd dash. At the plate he keeps high hands and a high back elbow from a balanced stance. He shows a small load and the ability to make quick turns and transfer his weight through contact with a direct bat path that finishes higher creating loft on the balls he drove to the middle of the field. From the OF he showed off a very strong arm (79 MPH) that gets out of the glove early and showed longer actions before having carry and utilizing his hops to put the ball where he wanted. Given his tools and talents as a freshman, Barrese is a player all colleges in California should be aware of.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, 5-foot-9, 150-pounds though appears to be a bit taller and stronger than listed size, put together well with athletic and streamlined proportions.One of the fastest times at the even running a 7.06 60 yd dash on a slower surface. Hitting he showed a slightly open stance keeping even hands and a high back elbow. The hands work back while creating short leverage from a compact swing (82 MPH exit velo) that focuses on staying to the middle and oppo sides of the field. In the OF he flashed an above average arm (87 MPH) that was very quick and compact. His strong use of his body allows the ball to have quality carry that was online through the bases. Gets to the ball athletically and under control with good body control that allows him to be an accurate and consistent thrower.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-9, 150-pounds, lean and lanky young body type, plenty of time to gain strength on his fame as he's just started his freshman year. Ran a strong 60 yd dash for age group with 7.51 time. Offensively keeps low, even hands that get onto plane early. Showed quick bat speed (78 MPH exit velo) that creates loud contact while flashing pull-side power and line-drives with a pull approach. From the outfield showed a quick, compact arm that was whippy from a low slot (75 MPH). Throws had carry and put on spots where infielder could make plays. Talented young player with chance to develop as a two-way player.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, physical mature body showing present strength. In batting evaluation he showed a balanced stance with a high back elbow and slight load of the hands back while getting on time with a foot lift. Bat has strength to drive ball and flashed more with ability to backspin the ball into the pull side gap (87 MPH exit velo). From the outfield showed a short and compact arm that kept in time with a strong lower half (76 MPH); throws were online with some flashes of life. Has a couple of tools that certainly showed up and can continue to develop.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, strong physical build that still has room for tightening as he matures. Fringe average runner that projects better down the road with a 7.68 60 yd dash. Offensively utilizes a toe tap timing while keeping his even hands tight to the body. Body has a slight bend while keeping a flat bat while the hands showed flashes of quickness as he peppered the field (79 MPH exit velo). In the outfield worked with a short and quick arm that produced carry and was regularly online (77 MPH); body utilized more infield actions than that of an outfielder, but arm flashed more potential with growth and strength gains. Competed as two-way player and showed ability both ways.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 6-foot-0, 165-pounds, younger body type, good frame to add size and strength in coming years. Average runner but the body type and physical projectability suggest faster times are ahead. Swing starts balanced with high hands that are quick with high finish (85 MPH exit velo). Stays behind the ball well, driving into his heels to loft balls into right centerfield from a direct path. From outfield comes up with high front side getting to high release off a longer action. Shows off growing strength in arm with online throws (73 MPH) giving strong hops for catchers.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-8, 135-pounds, strong lean body type with frame to gain strength. Average runner with 7.77 60 yd dash on slower surface, that time should definitely get faster as he develops. Utilized a slightly open stance with a high back elbow that stays in time with a front foot lift. Showed quick hands (78 MPH exit velo) with a barrel that was quick through the zone and regularly finished balanced as he looked to stay to the middle of the field during batting evaluation. From the outfield showed a loose arm that was quick and compact (78 MPH) showing more infield actions with throws regularly straight and online with flashes of carry through the bases.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-11, 145-pounds, lean and long young body with ample proportions that will fill out and gain strength in the coming years. Footspeed looks to be something that will improve as he physically matures as his body works well. Offensively utilizes a narrow stance with high hands and high back elbow. Bat works with length while staying in time with body and showing flashes of leverage that should turn into more pop at maturity (77 MPH exit velo). Maintained middle of the field approach during hitting evaluation. In outfielder showed flashes of more athleticism while keeping lower half in time with lower arm slot for throws to bases (68 MPH).

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-11, 152-pounds, young athletic frame with strong time for young age at 7.56 60 yd dash on less than fast surface. At the plate keeps even, high hands with the bat head facing the pitcher. Utilizes toe tap before turning bat through zone with quick hands. Bat path is quick into the zone with more strength needed as he matures. From the outfield utilizes a short arm with a high release; flashes of more from arm when utilizing legs and as he builds strength (68 MPH).

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-11, 150-pounds, lanky body type with projectable frame and proportions. Flashed as average runner during 60 yd dash and should be faster as he gains strength. Offensively utilized a tall narrow stance with toe tap while keeping even hands. The bat works directly to the ball flashing quick bat speed with the ability to barrel balls and create backspin to the pull side gap (77 MPH exit speed). From the outfield he showed a loose, wider arm that has some length on the backside (71 MPH). Arm showed flashes of carry when it worked in time with the body, but can continue to work on pulling through the ball to create less arch on throws.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - 5-foot-8, 140-pounds, good frame on younger player, shaped well. Strong average run time during the 60 yd dash at 7.41 on slower surface. At the plate he utilizes a wider, balanced setup with even hands. The small load back allows him to create momentum before his hands go directly to the ball. The swing is compact and allows balanced weight transfer through the ball. Produced 75 MPH exit velocity from tee while focusing towards middle of field from BP. In the outfield he showed some growing arm speed (68 MPH) from a compact action that kept balls online with a small arm side run.

10/7/18 - Central Coast Open - Uncommitted, 5-foot-11, 160-pounds, lithe lean body with fast twitch type actions and strength. One of California's top 2020 talents. Fastest runner at the event with 6.75 (handheld) 60 yd dash. At the plate utilizes a crouched, open stance with high hands and high elbows to match. Showed above average bat to ball skills (93 MPH exit velo) with ability to control barrel and drive balls deep into gaps. Swing shows balance with excellent weight transfer creating a very loud bat that explodes through the zone. From outfield showed a very quick and compact arm that regularly put the ball on a line to every base (84 MPH). The above average arm worked really well with the “pro-hop” athleticism he showed and his ability to stay behind the baseball through release.
