The 2018 Cave Spring Knights shutout the William Byrd Terriers 10-0 in five innings. LHP Trey Hodson spun a no-hitter attacking both sides of the plate while fanning eight and allowing just one base on balls.
It was early and often for Cave Spring, as leadoff hitter Logan Altizer got the Knights rolling with a 0-2 double down the third base line. A Caleb Pritchard single scored Altizer and the Knights were on the board. In the bottom of the frame Hodson set the tone, breezing through the inning facing the minimum and striking out one.
In the second, the Knights added another run when Cameron Caldwell clobbered a booming home run that sailed over the left center fence into the woods. Hodson had another short time on the mound in the second striking out two, with surgical precision.
Byrd's starter, Josh Hillard kept the Terriers in the game, working the corners and keeping the visitors on their heels for the first few innings.
In the home fourth, Wyatt Hage got on a base with a slow roller to third. Andrew Neighbors then reached on an error and a Caldwell single would score Hage. Caleb Wetzel singled scoring Neighbors then Hobson helped his cause with a two out single to enlarge the Knights lead to 4-0.
The fifth would be last inning of the game. Facing another reliever, the Knights stepped on the gas. The six-run final inning was highlighted by hits from Altizer, Jalen Buster, Hodson, a double form AJ Cacciatore, a double from Hage, and a RBI single by Wetzel.
Cave Spring improves to 3-1 on the season.
