SAN ANTONIO, TX – In the first ever playoff meeting between the two NEISD rivals, the stands at Virgil T. Blossom stadium was packed for Thursday night’s series opener.
2017 LHP Richard Gilbert, Texas Tech commit, took the hill for Johnson, looking to build off of his game 1 victory against O’Connor HS in round 2. Reagan sent senior LHP Jake Hoggatt out after throwing a complete game in game 3 against Smithson Valley HS last Saturday.
Reagan began the game by capitalizing on two Johnson errors to score a run in the top of the first inning. The Rattlers would score again in the top of the third as junior OF Porter Brown lead off with a single, advanced to third on a double by senior Ramon Garza, and scored on a single 2017 OF Cade Bormet (Missouri commit).
Hoggatt cruised through four innings but stumbled in the fifth inning when one run on three consecutive singles by Johnson’s 9-1-2 hitters forced Reagan to transition to the bullpen. 2018 LHP Cal Carver, who had previously been the Rattlers’ game 1 starter, came in to stop the bleeding. A mishandled ball at second base allowed Johnson to score a second run, but that was all they could muster.
Gilbert’s night came to an end after six innings of work and 114 pitches. 2018 RHP Joe Jimenez took the hill in the top of the seventh but only lasted 1/3 of an inning and was responsible for five runs. 2019 RHP Dylan Johnson entered the game and finish the seventh inning.
Carver finalized the 7-2 victory with three consecutive fly-ball outs, and picked up the win. Johnson and Reagan will meet again at 7:30 PM tomorrow evening for game 2.
