IRVINE, CALIF. - The annual PBR Tournaments California Summer Championships kicked off on Thursday with a loaded field that included some of the most prominent club teams in the state along with a few from Arizona. With a stacked field we anticipated many standout performances and that’s exactly what we got on Day One of the tournament.
Let’s dive into some of those standouts.
Tyler Albanese
Albanese was dealing from the first to the last pitch in this start, throwing a six inning no hitter on just 77 pitches and was a walk away from a perfect game. The uncommitted senior showed a very good three pitch repertoire that projects very well on his 6-foot-6 250-pound frame. There’s some polish with the fastball while the curveball shows heavy downer movement. The change is a perfect “steal-a-strike” pitch currently and projects for more.
2023 RHP/1B Tyler Albanese of @REV_Baseball showing a real nice mix of pitches here in the 2nd inning for Team California 17U. Fills up the zone with a fantastic tempo and has clean, repeatable mechanics. Uncommitted. pic.twitter.com/t5jfk5bIGb

Jake Sekany
Sekany was brilliant at times during his 4 inning complete game 10-0 win scattering just two hits to go with four strikeouts and a walk. The 5-foot-10 126-pounder has an obvious long, lean frame that has plenty of projection and uses a loose, repeatable delivery to attack hitters with a FB, SL, CH arsenal. The Granada HS sophomore has the makings of a name to follow as we head into next spring.
2025 RHP Jake Sekany of @matadorbaseball picks up his 4th strikeout in 4 innings and shows some emotion coming off the mound to cap off a 10-0 mercy for the @ejsportselite . Jake filled up the zone with a solid FB, SL, CH mix and was very efficient finishing with only 46 pitches. pic.twitter.com/CC8BYWgtbF

Wylan Moss
Junior-to-be Waylon Moss of Mater Dei HS impressed in his outing today for Saddleback Cowboys and with a 6-foot-2 180-pound projectable frame it likely won’t be the last time he impresses. Working 85-86 with a strong slider at 70-73, Moss cruised through four innings of one run ball striking out nine and walking two along the way. Showed a changeup later in the outing flashing late fading life in on righties, same as it did during warmups. Moss has the makings of an impact arm for Mater Dei come next spring.
Good look at ‘24 RHP Wylan Moss of @MDHS_Baseball. Working 85-86 T87 with a strong slider at 70-73. Shows feel for CH and CB. Loose, repeatable mechanics. Durable build with room for more. @PBR_California @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/u4AfL10oMb

Parker Vance
The sophomore from Granite Hills is sitting on a few Power 5 offers and it’s easy to see why. The strength and ability at the plate where he already has the ability to not only maintain the barrel in the zone but manipulate its path while in the zone. Very good understanding and feel for hitting. Rangy outfielder who takes good angles to balls with what appears to be a very strong arm - wasn’t tested in this game.
Cole Stokes
The Oregon commit appeared in relief, going three full innings while striking out four. He was a bit erratic with five walks but flashed polish early. The mechanics are repeatable and easy effort with a bit of an inverted w in the back. Attacked hitters and was aggressive in; slider projects to be an above average pitch.
2023 RHP Cole Stokes @colestokes4 of @RUSeaHawkBSB comes in relief and picks up two quick strike outs for @TB_SoCalTeams 2023. The University of Oregon commit throws his FB and SL with conviction and has a very projectable frame. pic.twitter.com/GkcYL8m4Zc

Carter Jorissen
The rising senior catcher/third baseman had a huge day for Team California 17U going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. Simple, short, and powerful through the zone, Jorissen had three barrels on the day as he also reached on an error.

Nolan Armenta
Only a ‘25, Armenta is showing this summer that he’s a name to know in the future and that continued in Game One of the tournament. He shoved in a five inning relief appearance, getting the win by scattering three hits and striking out eight against no walks on just 69 pitches. As impressive as that was, he also collected what proved to be the game winning knock for BPA. Only a sophomore at Sage Creek HS, Armenta is beginning to establish himself as a name to know on the recruiting trail.

Logan Reddemann
Reddemann has been a USD commit for some time and the question will be is he a hitter or a pitcher in the future. They’ll figure that out later, in this game he was a hitter and showed a very good ability to get the barrel on the ball, consistently paying off with hard hit balls. Also showed plenty of patience at the plate drawing a pair of walks. A bit of an uppercut path results from starting with low hands, but he showed the hand speed to handle pitches in this one.
‘23 SS/RHP Logan Reddemann of @qhhs_baseball/@wearethebombers smokes this 1-2 FB for an RBI knock to RF. Has added strength to frame w/easier power. @PBR_California @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/71IpJoqXKs

Logan de Groot
The junior to be at Santa Margarita didn’t get much to hit and when he did he was ready. Led off the game with a seven pitch walk before working a nine pitch walk in which he spoiled four quality offerings in his next at-bat. Finally in his third at bat he got a fastball over the middle and pounced on it narrowly missing a home run. The UCLA commit is playing in the outfield exclusively and showed that he can more than handle the position this past spring and so far in the summer. If the power continues to match the plate discipline, DeGroot’s ceiling has gone way up.
‘24 OF Logan DeGroot of @SMCHSBaseball/@sdshowbaseball narrowly missed a bomb to LF here. Finally got a pitch to hit and did damage. Had a great 8/9 pitch AB previously. Been good on the bases too. @PBR_California @ShooterHunt @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/RYRBrg3FUo

Brodie Purcell
Purcell was very good in his three innings pitched with six strikeouts, a pair of walks while not allowing a hit. He mixed locations, often dotting the fastball, while also changing eye levels. Command of the fastball was very good while the curveball continues to be a very impressive pitch. One of the better uncommitted arms in the 2023 class, Purcell appears on the cusp of taking the next step in his game.
Clean 1st IP for ‘23 Brodie Purcell of @JSerraLionsBB/@sdshowbaseball. Working 87-88 FB, 71-73 CB. Mixing locations and eye levels very well. A pair of K’s in 1st. @PBR_California @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/GldQkSAkON
